Find Ancestors

John Kirkland Gardner left his wife and family and went to America. He was born in Scotland in 1815 and was on the 1871 census living with Henrietta Bryan, 28 years his junior, her daughter Ada 1866 and their son Harace 1870 . Both Henrietta and Ada were listed as Gardner, his wife and daughter, although at the time this wasn't true. Henriettas husband Frederick Thomas Bryan sued for divorce in 1871 siting John Gardner. Frederick Bryan died in 1878 aged 32.

Henrietta Bryan Gardner died 29/05/1872 in Boston Massachuettes so they obviously left England between 02/04/1871 and the date of her death.

I have traced daughter Ada through to her death, she never went to America until after her marriage and even then I don't think there was any connection to the Gardners. I can't find anything at all on son Horace Frederick K (Kirkland??) Gardner except his birth and the 1871 entry.

John Kirkland Gardner remarried the year after Ada's death to a lady 28 years his junior and died in an accident in Manhattan in 1884.

If anyone with Worldwide Ancestry can tell me when they went to the US and if Horace was with them I would be very grateful

HI all,

I'm having trouble with upgrading to Ancestry World Wide which is why I am asking for help.

Lynn this isn't the right one I have tracked him back.

The 1871 census is the correct one but John was born in 1815 Henrietta was born in 1843 Fulham registered Kensington, Ada was registered Lambeth and Horace in Islington

John married Lottie Morehouse on 19/06/1873 it was stated as a second marriage for both of them. If this true he never married Henrietta as his. first marriage was to my great grandmother in London

This is great, thanks to all. I found that on 14/10/ 1886 Lorena Morehouse Gardner, mothers name Lottie Doke, married Joseph L Doke. Lottie was born Lottie Doke.

I wish I could find something on Horace as he would only have only been about 18 months. Ada went to live with her maternal grandmother but Horace has disappeared have checked english census's, deaths 1911 etc

Dee's naturisation records are for the right guy. Therefore poor Ada died 6 days after arriving in America, perhaps she became ill during the crossing. Where where was baby Horace??? I wonder if he also became ill and died too

I'm sorry I really don't know, hopefully someone will point you in the right direction though.


John's middle name is an interest to me as it was my maiden name, my ancestors were middle England based however I realise that way back they would have originated from Scotland.........I'm back to 1710 and no Scottish roots turned up yet.
