I know ADA EVERLINE POVER married William Albert Munday 28th November 1891 in Portsmouth Hamphire.
But somewhere along the line Ada Eveline Pover had relationship with JOHN ALLEN F DAVIS. The father of my grandfather John Edgar Pover.
I cannot find any marrage certificate to sopport the relationship between ADA and John Davis nor any devorce certificate. is there anyone that can shine some light on this

As your grandfather had his mother's name, she clearly didn't marry DAVIS, or whoever the father was

What documentary proof is there that DAVIS was John's father?

Any chance this is John and Ada in 1911?

it certainly does sound like a bit of playing away from home lol. John Davis was in Army serving in portsmouth and found census at barracks stating that she and John Davis were married!! but not sure they were

Stephen

Stephen Report 23 Jan 2011 14:11

Kucinta, i found in 1891 he was based in Hilsea barracks.and married to a LOUISA GROVER. Now there was a few brothers of my grandfather john edgar pover who were THOMAS DAVIS b 1906 in portsea and Josepth Harry DAVIS at that address you gave. Just to add to the confusion lol

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 23 Jan 2011 14:13

Stephen, divorce was unheard of for ordinary people in those days so it's unlikely they did actually marry.

Stephen

Stephen Report 23 Jan 2011 14:18

that explains why i couldnt make a marrage connection between Ada AND jOHN DAVIS

Kucinta

Kucinta Report 23 Jan 2011 14:19

So Joseph was born after the census?

Davis Joseph H Pover Portsmouth 2b 934 Sep 1911.

Stephen

Stephen Report 23 Jan 2011 14:25

Yes i have him born on 2nd july 1911. ive just noticed ADA EVELYN DAVIS was the details on josepths birth cert so Ada has taken hid surname and states formally POVER

William was still referring to himself as married in 1911:

MUNDAY, Albert William Head Married M 49 1862 Barrack Labourer W D Wilts West Lavington
MUNDAY, William Isaac Son Single M 17 1894 Labourer Hants Portsmouth
MUNDAY, Arthur Edward Son Single M 15 1896 Scholar Hants Portsmouth

Registration District: Portsmouth Sub District: Portsea and Landport
Enumeration District: 29 Parish: Portsmouth

Address: 5 St Georges Buildings Sun Street Portsea
County: Hampshire

(It appears on previous census that he also gave his name as Albert)

He has put 19 completed years of marriage.

Stephen Report 23 Jan 2011 14:31

Could they be stating they were married but went each others own ways

Stephen

Stephen Report 23 Jan 2011 14:32

i believe william albert munday did use his middle name which threw me ten left

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 23 Jan 2011 14:35

Stephen, I think Albert (William) just meant that legally he was still married, so Yes - they went off and did their own thing. Looks like he was also left to bring up the three lads.

Stephen

Stephen Report 23 Jan 2011 14:39

i think your abosolutley right and everything points that way. So chasing my blood line will go via John Davis not William Munday, although they would be my granfathers half brothers

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 23 Jan 2011 14:45

Because there are so many John Davis around I think you're going to have to buy his marriage certificate to Louisa Grover to get his father's details.
