lol!!!

but of course 25 would have been shown as 25 anyway!

it's 26 - 29 that would have been rounded down by 1or more years.

Gotta contradict you now, Sylvia. Ages 25-29 were shown as 25.

Maureen

sorry to contradict you

but ages were supposed to be rounded DOWN to the nearest 5 on the 1841 census

so it is the reverse of what you said

anyone aged 21 - 24 was shown as age 20, 26 - 29 was shown as 30

but some enumerators did ignore the instruction, and wrote down the exact age.

I noticed the comment that ages change on the census. In 1841 the age was not always exact, the recorder was only required to record the age up to 15 years and then round it up to the nearest '5'. So if you were 21,22,23,24 or 25 - you would be listed as 25, then from 26-30, you would be 30 etc. Some recorders wrote the exact age, others just rounded it up.

Hi Flip, you have been busy! Thanks for all your searching, Whatever Stow/Stower is called he does not get registered as such. Because the ages/dates of birth for all the children change so much in the census it is difficult to determine if it is possibly a nickname for Oliver 1849 or some other before William 1855?

Flip

Flip Report 22 Jan 2011 17:10

He was still on 1901 census, living with sister Annie Elizabeth Johnston at same address - she was now the innkeeper and head of household. No sign of Annie's husband though.

Flip

Flip Report 22 Jan 2011 17:02

Not convinced the name is what is on the original - but it is so difficult to read. Do you have access to original records so you can look for yoursels?

Frances

Frances Report 22 Jan 2011 16:28

Thanks Flip, the son now has a name! Isaac should be about 70/71

Thank you for what you have found Flip.
The last family will need checking out to see if they are in any way related.

Strange, they don't appear to be together on 1881 census but there is another Graham family at the same address - coincidence?

Frances

it was not unusual for 2 or more children to be baptized on the same day

it was cheaper!

or sometimes, there was not a priest / vicar in the town or village at all times.

From the single line G.R. census it appears that Isaac and Mary were still in Carlisle in 1861

Frances

Frances Report 21 Jan 2011 18:40

Thanks for that Mel. The census suggests that although John and Mary were christened on the same day they were not twins. I have looked for a marriage of Isaac and Mary in Scotland but not found one. I am guessing she was possibly
