Hi all.

I was wondering if anyone can locate a marriage index for my Great Great Grandfather.

He was John Henry Ramsey born 1874 in Cardiff.

I have got his death cert, informant was S A Ramsey, place of death was Hull, Yorkshire, year of death was 1947.
John went up North leaving his wife and family in Shropshire, So did John marry again??? i would say estimated time would be around the 1940s.

Many thanks in advance
Lisa

Did his wife in Shropshire get a divorce?

When did he leave the family?

Doesn't the death cert state the 'qualification' of the informant?

Hi Flick.

Thank you for reply.

His death cert states he was a Retired Ships fireman.

I have no idea if his wife in Shropshire did divorce. I do know that she died in 1951 and on her death cert it says... widow of John Henry Ramsey. Her name on the cert was Elizabeth Ramsey.

on John Henry's death cert, what does it say about S A Ramsey, are they a relative?

Flick

Flick Report 11 Dec 2010 11:09

Only one marriage for the name in the 1940's.......in Gloucester.

Try freebmd.......all the earlier ones are probably on there.....the last before 1945 on Ancestry is 1936

I didn't ask for his occupation......I asked for details of the informant....it should say what qualifies him/her to register the death

If his wife was said to be his widow when she died, she hadn't divorced him......so he couldn't legally re-marry.

And by the 1940's he'd have been heading for 70

Hi Tempest.
On the cert it says that S A Ramsey is the Widow of the deceased present at death.

Hi Flick. Thanks for that, suppose the gloucester one could be possible??

Just noticed one in 1940.......in Durham......but can't access spouse's details as she has a choice of surnames.

Hi Flick.

He was 73yrs at time of death.

I had wondered if S A Ramsey wasnt his legal wife but claimed she was when the death was registered. Or he may have commited bigamy????

Flick

Flick Report 11 Dec 2010 11:17

Not the Durham one.........forename was EDITH

Try freebmd as advised.

NOT the Gloucester marriage......her initials were M F

The 'widow' was probably just covering her tracks........

Thank you for your help. Will try on Freebmd.

I think you may have the wrong death for him. There was another John Henry, reg Durham Q1/1875, this is his marriage to Sarah Ann

there are several trees on ancestry with a John Henry Ramsey born 22 July 1874 in Cardiff and married to Elizabeth Weir (1970-1951)

two of the trees also give his death as 1951

Hi Mac.
Thank you for your help also, he was married to Elizabeth in 1895 in Ireland.

Hi tempest, yes those trees will be my relatives tree, but Thank you for your time.

You're welcome Lisa.

What confirmation from the death certificate do you have to confirm this is definitly your John Henry? I think the death you have is more likely to be that of John Henry born in Nothumberland and married to Sarah Ann. (Your John was a fish hawker on the 1911 census)

Tempest, I've checked the 1951 deaths and these isn't one for John in 1951 in England/Wales, nearest I can find is John Ramsay, reg Nthmbld W Q1 1952 (1b/504), no middle initial stated?

Hi Mac.

John Henry was born in Cardiff in 1874, his parents were John Henry and Mary nee Long.

John was Ships boilerman according to my relative. So with his occupation on the death cert a retired ships fireman, i figured it could well be the correct death. ???

Lisa Report 11 Dec 2010 12:46

Yes thats the correct date but the year he was born was 1874. I have his birth cert also.

tempest Report 11 Dec 2010 12:53

he must have been a mistake when he filled in the papers, I see in his earlier papers dated 16 Nov 1893 his age is 19 years 3 months
