Hi Julie,
For this area of Derbyshire it is often useful to have alook at the www.wirksworth.org.uk website which is an Alladins Cave of records for North Derbyshire 1600-1900.
Good luck

Julie

Julie Report 11 Nov 2010 17:51

mmm? Any sign of George born in Tideswell, maybe Litton? In 1826?

Julie

Derek

Derek Report 11 Nov 2010 17:45

Taddington has three Elizabeth Stones in the right timeframe:

baptised 26.05.1816 .......Joseph and Elizabeth
"` 15.08.1830 Michael and Ann
" 18.11.1832 George and Ann.......

for what its worth...not a lot methinks!!

Julie

Julie Report 11 Nov 2010 17:40

thanks Derek. It is confusing about Elizabeth as Robert Brentley is the lodger (or step-dad?)!

I appreciate your and Flicks help

Hi all...for what its worth..the Tideswell Parish registers confirm the marriage of George Terry and Elizabeth Brentley 25.12.1851 at Tideswell ,both coming from Newhouses..so Flick's 1851 offering is possible....but that would have been about March/April 1851..and wouldn't she be a Brentley rather than a Stone????????

what fun!!..i'm going to look at the Taddington registers!!

Bear in mind that Bakewell would be the Registration District..not the Parish........I've already been through the Bakewell Registers.

I was doing ok 'til i got to this point! Brentley - Stones and the missing Terrys. GR members helped me to track a William Terry who was in Derby Gaol at the time of the 1851 census for bigamy. Its easy to get side tracked! I've been trying to find his wife/wives and hoped if i could find some record of Georges' birth I might find out who his mum was ?!

Flick

Flick Report 11 Nov 2010 17:15

Side-tracking a bit.....I'll lay odds that this is Robert's son and family!

Julie

Julie Report 11 Nov 2010 16:58

I'm not sure but it seems elizabeth was called Stone but Robert Brentley was her step-father? And the only george terry i can find in the 1841 is a servant in Leics. Not certain its him though and cant find him at all in 1851?

Hi Julie............Flick you might be able to help here cos i am totally mystified as to why i cannot find them either married or single on any census...........????????????????

Derek.

Julie

Julie Report 11 Nov 2010 16:30

Thanks

Derek

Derek Report 11 Nov 2010 16:27

Ok..George Terry was not born..or at least he was not baptised in Tideswell...beware the IGI "submitted" entries..the degree of accuracy or indeed truth varies wildly....However..he did marry Elizabeth brentley at Tideswell..25.12.1851.........they are listed as both coming from an area called Newhouses......which is obviously in the area..but could be anywhere in the Tideswell/Buxton area

I know the area well.......bear with me.

Derek.

Occassionally the birth date is written in the baptism records but there were no certificates back then and it wasn't even compulsory to register children either. It was down to the individual churches to keep records of their congregation.

Flick

Flick Report 11 Nov 2010 16:16

The record you found is 'submitted', so must be viewed with catution.

His marriage cert will have the details of his father...if he knew him
