There are different spellings around, the urban myth is that 2 brothers fell out over how it should be spelt and both went there seperate ways taking their spelling with them. I recently saw it spelt Turfery yet another variation.

Paul I have PM'd you, I have a connection to these Turfrey's,
strangely the name seems to be spelled differently from area to area, mine are down as Turffrey.

Thanks for your help in this matter, I am trying to find any ancestors of Stanley turfrey born 1886 in heckmondwike and from the 1911 census was located in dewsbury west yorkshire.

Paul, maybe you could have confirmed 1911 is correct. Maybe you have posted on a "surname" board thinking this shows up when we go looking for queries, but it doesn't, so you need to give full name in your initial posting.
