Sharon, you can see Peters hill from google street maps, 8-14 no longer there. Proni is your best bet to find out about the houses your ancestors owned.

I was kindly sent a photo of the boot store on peters hill and it was great to see the business. could I get directed to were i maybe able to find out the history of the premises and if they still remain today as i know the old lodge road has been demolised but there was houses that still belonged to my gggranda while he moved to NZ and was wondering if these houses could be knocked down if they were still owned by people and if so would the people who knocked them down have to pay the owners for the houses they owned. where can i get this information and when the old lodge road was demolised and 8-14 petershill, thank you

Thank you. Im told that before they live ireland in 1921 they work at ship yard could it have been on another ship and could it off been there grandad Robert Beggs from daube st belfast that worked on titanic maybe?

FannyByGaslight Report 6 Apr 2011 20:33

RMS Titanic was a passenger liner that struck an iceberg on her maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York City, and sank on 15 April 1912.

In 1912 when Titanic sank Victor was 5years old,William was 12 and Robert 18.

I doubt very much that any of them helped to build it as 2 were too young and still at school and Robert was working with his father in the Boot business as it shows on the 1911 census of Ireland that was posted for you.

But you can google Titanic and then search for records of people who helped build her.

I know what you mean, so many stories told its hard to see which is correct. Thank you for your help. It seems he was a busy man from 1911 to 1920 when he died because he was also in the navy and when he died he was only 26yrs old. His father owned a sucessful Boot Manufacturer JB Beggs at 8 - 14 Peters hill Shankill Belfast in 1912 - 1921 when he had sold upthe business and emigrated to NZ. I guess his dad tried to get his children to be in the family business but he must not have wanted to do that work. Thank you so much

Sharonrose, it very unlikely that your great grandfather worked on the Titanic. He's in the boot business 1911, the Titanic maiden vogage was 1912 and according to Roberts marriage to Jessie Glover 1913 he a salesman. Unfortunely half of Belfast claim their ancestors worked on the Titanic, not to mention the descendants of those who immigrated.

Sorry Sharonrose, like Fan said you'll have to order his death cert to get your answer.

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 13 Dec 2010 18:17

If you just buy his death cert that I have posted earlier it may tell you a lot of what you want to know.
There is no other way to find out but to buy it.

Thank you Maura...I had one of those "moments"it seems and for some reason read it as Peter for father rather than Peters Hill for place of abode.

I can not find those Naval records anywhere on NationalArchives.I suppose they did not survive.
The record I posted is on Ancestry, but says little other than what I have posted.
I also as I said could find no record of him being on the Titanic.

Or do you mean he was one of the workers who built the Titanic?

It was built in Belfast.

But he is not on the lists for its one and only voyage anywhere I can find.

Thats excellent thank you Maura. I am told that robert died aged 26 yrs old in 1920 but not sure why so young. Stories are that he had a heart attack others are that he fell off a bread cart in Belfast and others that he had rheumtic fever. I am trying to locate the navy ship that he was on duty before he fell of the mast and hospitialised for years but unsure which hospital

You can search here for him...But I do not see his name, maybe I missed him?Or it was just family rumours that say he worked on the Titanic.

I do not think he would be in Chelsea Hosp but maybe a Naval hosp...But that is not my area of research,so not sure.Does it not give place of death on his death cert?

I am also unable to find him on 1901 or 1911 census in Ireland with father Peter..What was his mothers name and who and when and where did he marry please
