Helen, hope you don't mind but I've broke your message up to make it easier to read and to extract info to search on:

I've lost Joseph Davies completely and the Renfrey family.
The info I have is in the 1901 census:

This is my grandmother Mary Catherine Davies - I have her birth certificate as confirmation.

I have Mary Elizabeth Renfrey 21 - father James Henry (haulier) and Joseph Davies 28 (father deceased cattle dealer). Marriage certificate 1892 Swansea for both their address is 25 Pedler street, brynhyfrydd, swansea.

I have sent off for Joseph's birth certificate but while I'm waiting i keep trying to find them -
nothing for Joseph in all the census - i have lost the renfreys in the 1891 and the 1881 census.

1st where is Pensarn for tracing Joseph?

Helen, there's a dark green menu across the top of this page. There's a heading called "Search Trees" - click on that and fill in the boxes.

Helen - I would never dream of using GR!! I used FindMyPast (FMP) and ticked the box next to the surname so it looked for variations. You can search FMP for free but need credits to view (although the 1881 is actually free).

I'm getting nowhere with 1891, though.

Helen

Helen Report 3 Oct 2010 19:53

i know what you mean i wish i had researched the different webb sights on geneology cos im finding GR very limitted with variations and just using addresses compared to fmp and even ancestory
on fmp perhaps you could look up the 25 pedler street brynhyfrydd swansea and see who lived there in the 1891 census as mary and joseph only married the year 1892 after and both gave that as their address
i cant look up addresses on GR!!!
perhaps the renfreys lived there with joseph as a lodger/boarder
praps im clutching at straws
many thanks helen

Helen - FMP keeps crashing (they've had server problems off and on all day). I've got visitors now, but will look up that address for you tomorrow, unless any other helpers see this and look it up for you.

I can't find Pedler Street on the l89l census - is it handwritten on the marriage cert. - if so, could it be spelt differently.
Regards, Liz

Helen

Helen Report 4 Oct 2010 11:42

yes it s hand written easy readable but yes totally agree about the spelling especially as its been proved with the renfrey s in 1881

FannyByGaslight Report 4 Oct 2010 12:38

I have searched for Pedlar street on Ancestry and FMP and have also walked the census and checked all the enumeration districts for 1891 and that one appears to be missing from everywhere in 1891.

The only other thing I wondered about Helen is how did you find the refs etc to send for Joseph Davies birth cert if it is not certain where he was born?
It clearly says Pensarn, which must be the one just on the outskirt of Carmarthen (now has a business park with Focus etc,I go shopping there on occasion)as I can not find one in Glamorgan.

Helen

Helen Report 4 Oct 2010 12:47

liz 47
yes the marriage certificate is hand written but easy readable i agree the spelling of pedler street could be wrong as proven by the renfrey s in the 1881 census

Helen Report 4 Oct 2010 13:00

i do not have the reference number for the birth certificate

i have ordered without one
all the details they have is

joseph davies c 1864 pensarn father david

i know it can work because prior to having a ref number for my grandmother mary catherine b/certificate because of the may c on the 1901/1911 census i sent off for birth certificate without it
i wast about a month before i recieve it
mean while i found a reference number and was impatient to wait for the b/certificate without a ref to arrive so i sent off for another one with the ref number
one arrived and then the other arrived they were identical so i have double confirmation on my grandmother

so im praying the same for joseph that they can find him !!!!!!

thanks for the info on pensarn its lifted my spirits on the quest for joseph s ancestory
thank you
