FannyByGaslight Report 13 Sep 2010 14:42

You are correct I believe as my Cottee line come from Essex and West Ham area.

But if you are looking for someone in particular you will need to give some details.

Your parents are Shirley (Cottee born 1935)and William Crabtree?
Its what comes up when I search for a marriage of those 2 surnames.

Her eldest sibling was??

Births Jun 1916
Cottee Alfred G Phillips W.Ham 4a 593

So this should be her parents marriage

Marriages Dec 1914
COTTEE Herbert G Phillips W. Ham 4a 845
Phillips Mary A E Cottee W.Ham 4a 845

Edit..Just to add that I doubt I am connected to you as my Cottee line should not really be Cottee as it came in through an illegitimate birth due to the mother having married a Cottee but then having children after seperating from Mr Cottee.

I will be away for a few days until Saturday but look forward to any reply that you may have made on my return Derek..

Just checked my threads before the off.
Will get back to you on Saturday Derek.
I checked for all Cottee postings on here and there are only 5 !

So it would seem we are in an elite group.

My grandmother was born a Cottee, but her mother was with another man by then and had to reg her as Cottee as she was still married to Mr Cottee.
He was from Colchester but Nan was born in West Ham.
Her older sister ,my great aunt Kit was a REAL Cottee,I have her BC that says Mr Cottee was her father.

Last name: Cottee
This interesting surname of French origin is a metonymic occupational name for a maker of chain mail, deriving from the Old French "cot(t)e" meaning "coat of mail". It is unlikely to have been a nickname for a wearer of a coat of mail, since only the richest classes, who already had distinguished family names of their own, could afford to be so well protected in a garment which required many hours of skilled labour to construct. The surname dates back to the mid 16th Century, (see below). Further recordings include one Barthra Cottye who married Elyzabeth Hyde on June 15th 1598, in London. Thomas Cottee married Anne Pepys on May 28th 1708, at St. Benet's, Paul's Wharf, London, and Elizabeth, daughter of George and Mary Cottee, was christened in 1772, at Christ Church Spitalfields, Stepney. One Elizabeth Cottee married Cottleb Sucher on December 15th 1794, at St. Anne Soho, Westminster. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Peter Cottye married Sisley Rayner, which was dated 1568, London, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth 1, known as "Good Queen Bess", 1558 - 1603. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

FannyByGaslight Report 18 Sep 2010 21:49

Hi Derek.
Got back home earlier today.

You need to send for the marriage cert of your grandparents really if you only know your grandfathers name, but was your grandmother Mary Phillips?

Marriages Dec 1914
COTTEE Herbert G Phillips W. Ham 4a 845
Phillips Mary A E Cottee W.Ham 4a 845

There is this ww1 record on Ancsestry that is that 1882 birth that Kath posted I believe and if he is your grandfather it would be strange as he says his wife was Frances May Flick and they married on Sept 24th 1914 and have no children at the time he enlisted.

Marriages Sep 1914
Cottee George H Flick Rochford 4a 1445
Flick Frances M Cottee Rochford 4a 1445
Flick Francis M Cottee Rochford 4a 1445

British Army WWI Service Records, 1914-1920 about George Herbert Cottee
Name: George Herbert Cottee
Estimated birth year: abt 1882
Age at Enlistment: 33
Residence: 6 Castle Road, Rayleigh
Document Year: 1915
Regimental Number: 6473
Regiment Name: Gloucestershire Regiment
Number of Images: 15

I have found him on 1911 and 1901 for sure as Herbert George and Herbert G and it all ties in with him being the 1882 birth posted by Kath with what info he has given on his WW1records.

So it would seem we have 2 different men with the same name?

His marriage cert to Mary Phillips if she is your mothers mother is a must for HIS fathers name I would say,and also for his age on marriage and occupation.

You need to give all the info you have on Herbert George Cottee.
Is this his death?

Name: Herbert G Cottee
Death Registration Month/Year: 1947
Age at death (estimated): 60
Registration district: Essex South Western
Inferred County: Essex
Volume: 5a
Page: 192

Because if so this I think is his birth reg and has been mistranscribed on ...freebmd...as I have checked the index and it is Cottee on that..
It is not on Ancestry at all.

Births Jun 1887
Cottea Herbert George Fulham 1a 208

Which also checks out with the 1891 census.

I also note that his eldest son born in 1916 was named Alfred, the same as the fathers name on this census.
