Cathy's posted 1891, but I think next door is maybe relevant, too:

1891 England Census
Civil parish: Sutton
Ecclesiastical parish: Holy Trinity
Town: St Helens
County/Island: Lancashire
Country: England
Street Address: 20 Clarence St
Registration district: Prescot
Sub-registration district: St Helens
ED, institution, or vessel: 30

Wm Burker 33 Rainhill, Lancashire, England Head M Coblier
Mary Burker 31 St Helens, Lancashire, England Wife M
James Burker 2 St Helens, Lancashire, England Son
Margt Burker 1 St Helens, Lancashire, England Daughter

Source Citation: Class: RG12; Piece: 3025; Folio 70; Page 32; GSU roll: 6098135.
[It's not clear if name is Burke or Burker - it really does say Coblier - I'm thinking Collier, rather than cobbler]

Births Dec 1887 (>99%)
Stringfellow Kate Ellen Prescot 8b 713
[Image confirms this entry - NB 3q before Dea's marr]

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1888
Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers At Reference
BURKE Thomas STRINGFELLOW Ellen Prescot Register Office or Registrar Attended Prescot R/41/192
[So either a Rego Office marr, or a non-conformist/RC marr]

Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1887
Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference
SPRINGFELLOW Kate E St Helens St Helens SH/169/53
[Looks like a mistranscription at LancsBMD - I'll get it checked]

So did she take her dad's name, or her step-dad's?
I'm inclined towards the former, but really who knows?

I know Dea, it's too much of a coincidence! All this time I've been looking for a Stringfellow...

Thanks again one and all for your help!

Best wishes

John.

Dea

Dea Report 30 Aug 2010 15:48

The Catherine Burke marriage MUST be the one ???

It is a strange coincidence the 'her' mothers maiden name was Stringfellow!

Parent's marriage:

Marriages Jun 1888

***Burke Thomas Prescot 8b 950
ROURKE Maggie Prescot 8b 950
***STRINGFELLOW Ellen Prescot 8b 950
WHITTLE James Prescot 8b 950

Perhaps when they registered the birth the registrar looked at Catherine and said 'mothers maiden name'??? - Stranger things have happened.

John Report 30 Aug 2010 15:33

Hi mgnv, I did try Ireland but there were no results for Stringfellows at all. However I couldn't find any sites for Scotland so Scotland is a possibility.

mgnv

mgnv Report 30 Aug 2010 15:15

AoGG - the location's in the initial post - namely Prescot RD. John was right in his guess - the birth was rego'ed in the St Helens subdistrict of Prescot.

Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1915
Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Reference
MCBRIDE Peter St Helens St Helens SH/337/70

Les suggests they weren't married.
If you click on the page # link for your hit at FreeBMD, then what you should see is another entry on that page for
Stringfellow Peter Stringfellow Prescot 8b
but that's not there. (In this case, the index is one of the 10 quarters thru 1932 that aren't completely transcribed - just 97-99% done - the completion rate for this quarter is 99% - again in initial post, so John should really look up "stringfellow" births, click on the image link, and see that this page looks like it's been done, so not in the incomplete 1%.) We don't know that the parents were wed, but that's what the registrar was told. If they weren't, then there's no hope of finding their names from a m.rego, so one would need to get their names from a b.cert. This is the only McBride-Stringfellow b.rego on FreeBMD 1911-1921.

There are a couple of other possibilities one would need Peter's b,cert for. It might show his mum was Mary McBride late Smith formerly Stringfellow, so we'ld need to look for the marr of McBride to the widow Mary Smith, and also the marr of Smith to Mary Stringfellow. Once we know his dad is, say, Donald McBride, we can try and find him on the 1911. Especially with a name like McBride, one can't discount a non-English UK marr, so maybe you'ld need to check Ireland or Scotland too.

Hi Dea + Cathy, I'm fairly sure I've got the right birth reference, not 100% though. Unfortunately I know nothing about Peter's parents or of any brothers and sisters.
I must admit though that the census records for the McBride family is very tempting. In fact I've just had a quick look for Catherine Burke on Free BMD/Ancestry and HER Mothers maiden name was Stringfellow!! Could that be a mistake by the registrar?

Cathy

Cathy Report 30 Aug 2010 14:43

Not a Stringfellow unfortunately!

Are you absolutely certain that you have the correct birth reference?

Did Peter have any brothers or sisters??

Do you know anything about his parents?

Unfortunately Ann I don't know where the marriage was possibly St. Helens, although as Les has pointed out they may not have married (didn't think of that.)
