Anita

Anita Report 11 Aug 2010 20:38

i have an Elspeth Wilson Jeffrey [Elsie] c1886 born Australia, known as Elsie in the 1901 census living in South Shields. She married Charles Richard Tewaag in June 1907 they had a daughter Elspeth Julia born 1908, Elsie died 1965,

I can't find a birth or a death of Charles, I thought maybe he was born somewhere else and as he is'nt present on the 1911 census maybe he left his family and returned where he came from.

Any help would be a big help
Thank you
Anita

Jonesey Report 11 Aug 2010 21:05

The name Tewaag does not sound particularly English or indeed from anywhere in the UK. The theory that he did not originate from within these shores is favourite I would say. Googling seems to indicate that most Tewaag's are of German descent.

A copy of his marriage certificate might reveal some clues such as his occupation and that of his father.

How is Elsie described in the 1911 census, Married or Widowed? Have you been able to follow her or her daughter forward in time?

If you look at the original image it is Charles Richard. Ancestry seem to have transcribed the name Thomas from the person above. There is only one Tewaag

Well evidently not otherwise it would be the same on Ancestry and it isn't. They have him as Thomas Tewaag as I have already explained.

Anita, I'm going to copy your PM here which I'm sure you won't mind. ;)

The easy way -- for both you and us -- is to reply in the thread (the purple Reply button at the top). It makes it a lot easier for us to know what the topic is, although with a PM headed Tewaag, there wasn't much doubt!

I didn't do much at all, but I'm sure those who did have got equally lovely messages.

Hello Janey

Thank you so much for the time and effort you put into finding the information . It amazes me that people give so much time and effort and work so quickly on other peoples behalf.

Thank you
Anita

JaneyCanuck Report 11 Aug 2010 21:59

Astra, I did look at Ancestry too, and I see the Thomas Tewaag. I would have thought they just imported the database from FreeBMD (because that is where the data at Ancestry to 1915 comes from). Possibly there was an error at FreeBMD initially (skipped line by the transcriber, that sort of thing) and the correction hasn't made its way to Ancestry.

Anita, you can go to FreeBMD and add "postems" to the two names in that marriage, and the child's birth, so anyone else who searches for them will find you. Many of us do that regularly.

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

If you subscribe to Ancestry you can also correct that "Thomas". If you don't, one of us would be happy to. I'd suggest that you PM someone (like ... me, I'll volunteer) your email address (an anonymous permanent online one like at Gmail) and a correction can be made with that info, again so anyone else searching can contact you.

(I've deleted the bumph)

-- I think that one looks excellent! - edit - and it matches the dob on Astra's passenger list records.

Anita, you need to get the marriage certificate to see what age it gives for Charles and whether it states a father's name. That would tell you whether the birth above is a match.

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

I haven't quite sorted through all those comings and goings -- but I'm wondering whether he might have anglicized his surname too, later, because of anti-German sentiment.

JaneyCanuck Report 11 Aug 2010 22:27

Oh, and I did check the Cdn and Aus white pages on line, no Tewaag in either country. Not surprising anyway, if their only child was a girl. ;)
