Ann Report 21 Jul 2010 21:16

I was wondering if anyone maybe able to help me please.
My question is "If someone was in prison in 1911" would they of been on the Census? I have looked on the 1911 census for this person but cannot find them.
Also would anyone know which prison this person may of been in? The person in question is a woman from the Greenwich area.
Thank you for you time Ann.

Ann,

Yes they should be included. As for which prison I would not have a clue and I suppose the severity of the crime would also dictate as to which prison she would have been placed in.

If you need help with the 1911 please ask, as she just may have been mistranscribed.

Yes she would have been on the census. Can't help you with which prison.

Have you googled for prisons in that area?

Hi Ann,

Still trying to find the others, I would google that address and see what info you can find about the establishment, why people were taken there etc.

Maybe there would be notes on Rosina's school log recording the reason for her admittance?

I must be going loopy! what is the address on 1901

Ann

Ann Report 21 Jul 2010 22:43

Ann the address was 2 Glenforth Street, which is the same as James Norris born 1901 on his birth Certificate {James being James and Alice`s son}
James was born after the census was taken

what does the E stand for??

E Alice Norris

It could be that she is listed in the prison as Exxxx Norris

they wouldn't worry about which of her names she usually used

alternatively, she might just be listed under initials only.

Many prisoners and inmates were shown that way in earlier censuses to preserve their privacy .......... not sure if that applied in 1911

Either FMP is going mad or I am going loopy..............just looked at no2 and they are not there..............wea re talking about the 1901.....right?

Ann

Ann Report 21 Jul 2010 22:55

SylviaIn Canada i do not know what the E stands but on her marriage certificate it only has Alice Norris {nee} Stanton born 1877 from Deptford, husband James Norris born Greenwich. There was no E with her name.

They are listed under KORRIS! I actually searched *orris and no result which is weird.

The only James I can find who is a floater (not belonging to any family) is also in a home in Essex, but his birth place is given as Herts??

How do you know the parents were alive in 1911?
