Thought so Sylvia.

If they aren't meant to use non BrightSolid sites for the clinic, wonder if they would use them when replying on non-clinic threads? Just musing!

Complaint:

do you realise that your statement on the Help Clinic Guidelines that "Genes Advisors are not employees of Genes Reunited, they are members recognised by us for their effort and knowledge when helping other members." ................ makes the rest of us look inept ...... and will lead to poeple thinking that helpers on other boards are less than knowledgeable.

This was not exactly what was meant when I and others asked GR in the survey earlier this year to make more recognition of the fact that all the help offered on this site was by members.

How do you know that the Official Advisors ARE in fact the best and most knowledgeable helpers?? I can tell you for a fact that there are others who are much better than you would ever believe ................ and I do not count myself among them, even though I was one of the ones approached last week.

-----------------------------
Response:-

thank you for your feedback. I am sorry you feel this way.

Before we started the Help Clinic we carried out extensive market research and one of the things that came up was that those members who did help on the message boards felt under-valued. So, this is one of the reasons we chose to appoint Genes Advisors. These are members who are very happy to try and help our other members. No-one is claiming to be an expert at all, but each and every one of them does their best to offer an answer or point someone in the right direction. We are also offering much-needed recognition to those members who generously devote their time to helping people.

As for the star, I think you'll find it was a 6 pointed star that was used in WW2. I can assure you that our intention was never to offend anyone. My own relations are Polish Jews.

However, I have taken your comments on board and will discuss them with the my colleagues on the Genes team.

Best regards,

Estelle

----------------------------

My reply just now:-

Dear Estelle

Your intentions might have been for the best, and might have been an attempt to answer the fact many people (including myself) felt that the efforts of the members who do all the research on the GR boards was unacknowledged and undervalued by the company. In fact, it often seemed that our volunteer labour was being used as an advertising point ………. “see all the help you will get in furthering your research on our Community boards” …………. with no mention that it was other members doing the helping.

All the helpers do it because they love the hobby, and feel they have expertise to pass on.

However, as a professional editor, I see very clearly that when a statement is made that a certain small group of helper members are recognized as "Genes Advisors are not employees of Genes Reunited, they are members recognised by us for their effort and knowledge when helping other members." …… then this implies that they have been selected because they are better than anyone else.

This then impugns the members who have not been so identified. The separation into one board for the Advisors, and other boards for everyone else also helps to indicate the separation. The yellow star also helps fuel the implication that there is something extra special about these people.

It may well lead to helper members on other boards being told by requestors “you are not recognized as a Genes Advisor so you must not be any good”.

As I said in my email, there are some excellent helpers who did not wish to be labeled as an Advisor. They are the ones who can ferret out information to help break down brick walls, who can think outside the box, who have an instinctive or intuitive feeling that something is correct when it seems that it is not (or vice versa) ……. I look in awe at some of the research they do and results they achieve! Yet they could well be told they are no good.

What I think was wanted most by the people answering the survey was a statement somewhere, on both the site AND in your advertising, that the help given in researching ancestors was done by members helping other members, and not by GR employees.

This all came about because every helper has on at least one occasion been mistaken as an employee of GR, often with the statement “you have to help me because you are paid to do so”. Or “what do you mean you can’t find anything, you’re an employee”. Or “why should I say please or thank you, you’re an employee and paid to do the work” …………… I have to say, I’ve never understood that last one!! Everyone deserves politeness!!

As for the yellow pointed star …….. yes, you are right, there is a difference in the number of points. BUT the fact remains that there are several people upset and offended by the connotations.

I did attempt to answer your last email to me, giving you my reasons for turning down your offer to become one of the Advisors, including some of the things I have said in this email ……. but I had been blocked and the email was undeliverable according to my server.

Sincerely

Anyhow, I guess what we'll all have to do is check the Clinic every time we see a new thread, and ask people posting on TTF, from now on, that is, NOT to post in the Clinic if they have an active thread on TTF, until it seems to have been unsolved there.

Evenin' Sylvs. You're in good form. Love your letter. You're quite right of course. Having members marked out as 'special' is bound to cause a feeling of unease with others.

Did you see Gins has been mentioned on the Success board?
