My husband's Gran was Sarah also but called Aunt Sal by her favourite neice. And we have an ancestor who seemed to alternate between the two!

I can never resist a Lincolnshire enquiry - got lots of ancestors from there

However, as Thomas gives his birthplace as Rutland - this MAY be his baptism

There are two on the IGI - this one is nearer to Lyndon - the other one is close to Stamford.

Hope you don't mind my butting-in, Jan - after you found all the family, it seems a bit cheeky to tag on the end.

Shirley - can I just echo Jan's comments about being open-minded..............a letter here or there in a name is nothing - quite often the differences are down to transcription errors by Ancestry etc......or bad writing, smudged images, and most of all, the fact that most people were illiterate, and the enumerator had to write what he thought the name was - or just interpreted what he heard. This is particularly relevant when people are living in different counties, and their accents/dialects become part of the equation.

One more little point - my great gran was officially Sarah - but all her family called her Sally.

Good night

I think the uffington relation might be wrong Johns a very common name.

brummiejan Report 17 Jun 2010 21:23

Well, there is no way of knowing the relationship between Sarah, John, Jane and Cornelius. They are of the same generation roughly, could be siblings or cousins perhaps. It's unfortunate their father is John in both cases!
Need a good night's sleep with this one I think!

See you then! If all else fails, check if there is a Mormon family history centre near you, as they can order the parish records for you to have a look at (there is a fee, but I believe it is quite modest).

Just to return to the beginning, we aren't any further on are we! Got a bit side-tracked.
Are you local to the area Shirley? A look at the parish record might just hold a clue.

Shirley, just a bit of friendly advice! Variations like Sarah/Sally and Stinson/Stimson are neither here nor there in this game. If you stand back a bit you can see they are the same family.

No way of knowing if John is a brother or maybe a cousin, but I bet this is his marriage:

Marriages Dec 1849 (>99%)
Kirby Jane Ann Bourn 14 518
Shillaker George Bourne 14 518
Stimson Jane Bourne 14 518
Stimson John Bourne 14 518

From IGI:

John Stimson

Father: John Stimson Family

Marriages:

Spouse: Jane Ann Kirby Family
Marriage:
05 DEC 1849 Market Deeping, Lincoln, England

Sally and Sarah are interchangeable.
The Stinson's were born in Lincs (Thomas in Much Deeping) except for John who was born Peckham. Must be relatives.
EDIT Both John and Robert are bricklayers interestingly. Wonder if he moved down there to learn the trade?
