I am trying to trace these two ancestors of mine but I am not having much luck. According to someone else on Genes Reunited they married on the 24/11/1833 in Mucclestone, Staffordshire, but the problem is I have not been able to find thier marriage myself. I have found them on the 1841, 51, 61 and 71 census so have all of their children but I can't seem to find their parents. This is what I have so far

Father: James , Mother: Mary
Exact Spelling: Off
Batch Number: C010262

1. ALICE JERVIS - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 19 NOV 1854 Mucklestone, Stafford, England

2. MARY JERVIS - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 17 JAN 1848 Mucklestone, Stafford, England

3. ANN JERVIS - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 09 NOV 1834 Mucklestone, Stafford, England

4. KATE JERVIS - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 07 JUL 1850 Mucklestone, Stafford, England

5. ELLEN JERVIS - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 16 JUL 1837 Mucklestone, Stafford, England

6. WILLIAM MARTIN JERVIS - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 11 DEC 1842 Mucklestone, Stafford, England

7. PETER JERVIS - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 15 APR 1855 Mucklestone, Stafford, England

8. BETSEY JERVIS - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 23 FEB 1840 Mucklestone, Stafford, England

9. FANNY JERVIS - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 26 JUL 1857 Mucklestone, Stafford, England
Note: from a census there is a Fanny born in 1846 so either the parents took 10yrs to baptise her or the first Fanny died

On the 1851 census there is a William Jervis or Martin (it's unclear), aged 78, widower, living with James and Mary so he could either of their fathers.

Also on the 1851 census a John Matin, aged 11, born Maer, apprentice, is living with James and Mary Jervis. I am assuming he is a relation of Mary but I haven't yet been able to discover their exact relationship. In 1861 census he is living with a Joseph Bunn (46, agricultural labourer) and a Jane Bunn (45). I am assuming Jane is some relation to James or Mary, although again I have not been able to trace exactly what relation yet.

Also on the 1861 census, living 3 doors down from James and Mary Jervis, is a William Jervis (aged 66, Shoemaker), his wife Hannah (aged 64) and their children William (aged 28, bootmaker) and Ellen (aged 22, bootbinder) all born in staffordshire. I am assuming William is some relation to James Jervis but as I haven't yet traced Jame's parents I don't yet know what the exact relationship is.

K Report 12 Jun 2010 12:05

The census lists Mary as born in Maer so this could be her birth with father William re the 1851 census. The surname in 1851 does look like Martin

MARY MARTIN Pedigree

Event(s):
Birth:
27 SEP 1811
Christening:
20 OCT 1811 Maer, Stafford, Englan

Parents:
Father: WILLIAM MARTIN Family

WoodfortheTrees Report 12 Jun 2010 12:06

Does it give either of their father's on that?

K

K Report 12 Jun 2010 12:09

The record of the marriage on the IGI does not list parents names but it is possible that they could be on the original parish record

K

K Report 12 Jun 2010 12:11

The 1851 census lists William Martin as born in Sheepy Leics so I wonder if this could be him on the IGI

I've just checked the census again and it does look more like Martin than Jervis so thanks for that. At least I have Mary's parents now.

K

K Report 12 Jun 2010 12:22

James lists his birth as Mucklestone in the census. The IGI gives this children as possible siblings with parents James and Ellen Jervis so it looks like the William Jerivs you found in 1861 was James's brother

1. JAS. JERVIS - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 09 DEC 1799 Mucklestone, Stafford, England
2. WM. JERVIS - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 08 JAN 1797 Mucklestone, Stafford, England
3. JANE JARVIS - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 02 JUN 1789 Mucklestone, Stafford, England

Mary Jervis nee Martin would have been around 29 in 1841 so Joseph could be her older brother, which would make John her nephew and would explain why John is living with Mary in the 1851 census and is apprenticed to her husband. I will look into this possibility, see if I can't find a baptism for a Jpseph Martin with parents William Martin and Elizabeth. Thanks for all the help so far.

I was wondering if William and James Jervis were brothers so thanks for that.

K

K Report 12 Jun 2010 12:35

The IGI gives these possible siblings for Mary, but no Joseph

1. SAMUEL MARTIN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Christening: 24 JUL 1808 Maer, Stafford, England
2. MARY MARTIN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 20 OCT 1811 Maer, Stafford, England
3. SARAH MARTEN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 11 OCT 1801 Maer, Stafford, England

WoodfortheTrees

WoodfortheTrees Report 12 Jun 2010 12:38

Perhaps it is just a concidence then that John Martin is born in Maer like Mary and they're no relation at all, although that does seem odd.

K

K Report 12 Jun 2010 12:47

The christening of Joseph may just not be on the IGI. I couldn't see Joseph and family post 1841 to see where he was born, but will relook

Thank you for your help

K

K Report 12 Jun 2010 13:03

Sorry the children seem to have dispersed by 1851, presumably why John was living away from his family

WoodfortheTrees

WoodfortheTrees Report 12 Jun 2010 13:08

That's ok, thanks for looking; it seems as though John and Mary aren't relations although it does seem an odd coincidence

Without a birthplace for Joseph it is difficult to tell but there is this possible birth in Mucklestone with father William

That would make sense as that would make him Mary's older brother
