There were no penalties until 1875 for not registering births.

If she was illegitimate, she probably invented a father's name for the sake of propriety

What was the maiden name of Mrs Jones?

If Ada was related to Robert, it would say so on the census return - all relationships are as to the HEAD of the household

Hi, I'm trying to find the parents of Ada Conroy, Born in Liverpool in 1869. I've found her in the 1871 census as Ada Cornuay and she's living with a Robert Jones and his wife. Could anyone please tell me the relationship, if any, between Ada and Robert? 10 years later she is still living the Joneses (as a boarder?)
She married James Whalley in 1887, giving her fathers name as Thomas. However one of my 'contacts' tried to order her birth certificate only to find the registrar would not do so as her fathers name was not Thomas.

Thanks in advance

John.
