Lance Report 24 May 2010 10:12

Susan,

I have just found the info I was refering to.
Dorothy Agnes (Ellison) visited England in 1932 with her two sons Gordon and Donald, and her sister Bessie Florence.
Their other sister Ethel Maud went in 1934.
Their returns are documented in the Canadian records but I do not have access.
As I said, I have just found this info in the last week so there is a lot more to do.
May be we have some cousins over there!
I will be wanting to find more details on the lives of the three sisters. My mother is very interested to learn about her aunts.
Lets see what comes up next.

Susan,

I have just come across this thread, the subjects are my great aunts and they have been pretty much lost to me as well.
I have recently discovered that they all returned to England to visit their mother.
This is an active line of enquiry so I will keep you updated.

Lance.

I prefer this as an alternative to MM's databases URL:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/genealogy/index-e.html

You can drill down there to:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/passenger/001045-130-e.html

Unfortunately, LAC index their passenger lists by voyage, not passenger, but, with Jonesey's details, you can locate the passenger lists for the relevant voyages thru 1922.

Do you know that this year is the official "Year of the British Home Children" here in Canada?

PricklyHolly

PricklyHolly Report 11 May 2010 16:23

Still here Margaret. I am reading up on "British home children" most according to what i have read so far, were lost in the system and were never reunited with their familes again. And so i find the information you have provided to be most heart warming Margaret. Which also goes on to prove that whatever marriage i thought i found for Ethel in Canada , never existed!! I just know im gonna be on the Gin and Tonic tonight! Cheers Margaret .... Susan

Incoming passenger lists has Ethel Maud Dudley arriving Southampton 9 June 1934 from Quebec. Proposed address in England is 22 Somerset Rd., Portswood, Hants. She's a domestic, age 31.

This has got to be the same Ethel as the one above who had been in Canada since March 1912,

Oh! Hope you come back, Susan.

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 11 May 2010 15:36

This is an interesting one:
Ethel Dudley, age 31, single, born Southampton, England sailed from Southampton to Quebec, 18 July 1934. States she had been in Canada from March 1912 to 2 June 1934. Her home address was Toronto. Her relationship is listed as sister but the person above her is Grace Dummer, 27, single, born Portsmouth who had been in Canada from May 1926 to 27 May 1934. Her home address was Ottawa.
Ethel's employer was Miss Laurain Morrison, 54 Sheldrake Ave., Toronto.

I know what you mean Susan. It seems strange that Alice presumably gave up her "Middle" children Bessie and Ethel but kept the eldest and the 2 youngest. Perhaps she thought that Bessie and Ethel would stand a chance of a better life but held on to Dorothy to help her look after the others.

I presume you probably have this but just in case:

Susan,

I cannot spot Ethel Maud's marriage but Ancestry only has quite limited Canadian marriage records. Perhaps MargaretManson who is in Canada has access to more records over there.

Jonesey Report 11 May 2010 14:52

I see on the 1901 english census Dorothy had a sister Bessie born 1900. On the Canadian passenger list there is this Ethel Maud Dudley aged 8 who is accompanied by a Bessie Flor? Dudley who is aged 11. It looks as if they are with a party of young people who are going to Canada to become domestic servants. Home children??
