I am afraid that the only definite child details are those for Mary b.1853 at 25, Warwick Street, Bradford. Presumably baptised in Bradford.
Here is what I think is nearest so far:
1851 census 24, Wapping St. Bradford (FannyBG post 22.48 26/4)
1871 census Baptist Sq. Keighley (FannyBG post 20.09 26/4)
1881 census 90, Leeds St. , Keighley (AnnGG post 20.17 26/4)
1881 census 94, Leeds St, Keighley (Eringobragh1916 9.38 today)
1891 census 78, Turkey St. Keighley(detailed my post 17.08 today)

These References use 3 different spellings:
Brearton, Brierton, Brayton
There does not seem to be a plausible census return for my Breartons in 1861, and even the above means that the Breartons had 5 children in all, only one of whom is still around by 1891, when Mary Snr. died. I believe that Michael snr died Bradford Jun 1863 9b 42 age abt 52

Neil...Thanks for the Humour...!!!

Have had a look around and there are dozens of Macks and Brearton's (As per Spelling) in and around the Bradford and adjacent areas...
I did find a Death for a Michael Brearton aged 80 years Reg.Sept.1872 Keighley but if that was your Michael then "Mary" his wife was a number of years younger if she is the one with Michael jnr.1881....

Do you have any idea where the children were Baptised...?

Neil Report 27 Apr 2010 17:08

Apologies Eringobragh1916 , been out all day.
I think you are right about nos. 90 and 94 Leeds Street being mine. As a matter of interest, Mary snr. also appears on the 1891 census living with Daughter Mary and Son im Law Michael Moffat (spelling change) and their 7 children at 78, Turkey Street, Keighley. She died in June of 1891, (too much babysitting??)
This has narrowed the search down a great deal. Many thanks for your help.

Thanks FannyBG. The Wapping Road returnis the one I referred to earlier which I had previously discarded, but the Spring Street return is a new one to me. I will add it to the others and see if I can link any of them together.
As a matter of interest, I also have an1891 census return in which my Mary( the one born in 1853) is married to Michael Moffat, they have 7 children ( this later went up to 9), but widow Mary aged 75 is also living with them. Sadly she died in June 1891. I say sadly because i have become quite fond of her --- running all those different homes and completing all those different census returns, especially since she couldn't write back in 1853.
Thanks for your help.

FannyBG thanks, your last posting has only just shown up.
Mary Brearton Birth cert. gives father Michael Brearton occupation as a Woolcomber, mother was Mary Brearton nee Mack, and their address was 25, Warwick Street, Bradford on 4 May,1853. I haven't got her Marriage Cert. yet, but that is my next step.

Neil

Neil Report 26 Apr 2010 22:12

Thankyou all for your response to my posting. Between you and me we identified 6 different census returns between 1851 and 1881 , 5 of which had widow Mary as head of family, and none had my great Grandmother Mary b. 1853 in them. Eringobragh1916 then managed to eliminate one for me, but I am now confident that I had only missed a couple of points and I am not as bad as I thought. I will continue to wrestle with this, but meanwhile thankyou to all of you for your help. I feel much better now.

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 26 Apr 2010 21:22

I was asking about this one.
Births Jun 1853
Brearton Mary Bradford Yorks 9b 6*

The address can be searched on census and with her fathers occupation on her birth and marriage may make it easier to identify him on census if not at either address.

Brierton may be Breaton as of course a lot were iliterate and the enumerator would write what he heard.

Neil...If it helps with elimination of the "2 Marys 1881..."..Mary b. Ireland with son David (Posted by AGG at 20.27) was the widow of David she was nee Mary Long ...just ploughed through all the Variations of Brearton and found the above

FannyBG
re your post 20.09, the marriage 9a 347 is my great grandparents, but not sure yet where the Brierton family fit , but they will be relevant.
Not sure who you are asking about in the last line of that post, can you clarify please.

My post regarding the 1851 census (posted at 20.18) was in response to Fannyby Gaslight. By then I had several other responses for which I am extremely grateful. I will follow up all of them and any others that emerge. I have spent too long on this to give up now. Thanks again everyone.

Thanks for your interest.
There is a Michael and Mary Brearton on the 1851 census in Bradford. They have 3 children all born Ireland, youngest was born 1846. To be honest, I had discarded this family but I can not remember why.
You could well have put me on the right track. I will let you know.
