Ramona Report 6 Apr 2010 21:03

I am wondering if anyone might be able to help me put some information together … I have been (for many years) searching for information on my Great Granddad Harold Thomas Tucker.

I have marriage lines for him to both May Moore in 1926 (and divorce in 1932) and then to my Great Nan in 1944 (I also have the details of the child he had with May and the 5 children he had with my Great Nan … all of them being illegitimate the first being born in 1931, carrying my Great Nan’s maiden name ‘Parsons’ and the following four being registered under the name Tucker)

I also have his death certificate (Registered by my Nan) of his death in 1981 at a mental hospital called the Grove in Epsom. On his death certificate his DOB is listed as Nov 1905, but I cannot find a birth certificate in that area though there is one in Mar 1905 (was thinking maybe he was born in Nov 1904 and the dc is incorrect …but not registered until the following year????) also confusion as on his marriage lines his ages differ, though both wives were born in the same year the difference between their ages differs from 2 – 3 years) his father is listed as George Tucker (deceased on both)

I also found a baptisim record of a Harold Thomas Tucker for the 23rd November 1904 parents George and Alice.

Do you think this could be the same family? Also on the 1911 census there is an entry for a George and Alice Tucker with 8 children one of them being Harold. They are al from the Bermondsey area of London.

FannyByGaslight Report 6 Apr 2010 21:06

Does Harold give his fathers occupation on the marriage certs?

If he was born Nov 1905 he may have been reg in 1906?

Ramona

Ramona Report 6 Apr 2010 21:09

On one it states Bricklayer and the other Scaffolder.

I couldn't find an entry for 1906 - thats when I started to work backwards Also both the wives were born in 1906 which would have made him the same age as them on the certificates?

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 6 Apr 2010 21:11

Ok,thanks,at least he keeps to the same kind of trade...

Also on a death cert the information is only as good as the informant knew of course, and if he fibbed to your G,nan she would only know that.

So there are only these 2 between 1904 and 1906 then.

Births Mar 1905
Tucker Harold Thomas Williton 5c 231
Tucker Harold Thomas Southwark 1d 21

The Southwark one no doubt being the one in Bermondsey on 1911..

What ages does he give on the certs and are the witnesses any help?

Just laying it all out here really so we can see where its going ,or not as the case may be?

Ramona Report 6 Apr 2010 21:15

That’s definitely a possibility, my Nan was actually the one who registered his death and as he had been in the institute from when she was a little girl (and her Mum hardly spoke to her children about her life).

Its just so frustrating that I can’t find a link for him that I feel positive could be his family. My Nan seems to remember two sisters of his but names of ‘Maud and Tootsie’ which could have been nicknames for most females I believe.

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 6 Apr 2010 21:16

Maud/e is a proper name,Tootsie not I wouldnt have thought..

Just to add it in..

Ramona Report 6 Apr 2010 21:18

On his first marriage certifcate in March 1926 his age is listed as 21 the witness are a Frederick Robert Moore and L Knowles, I believe Frederick was the brother of his spouse.

On the second marriage in 1944 his age is listed as 38, the witnesses on that are the Brother in law of my Great Nan a George Bard and then someone called S Butt (have no idea who that was)

Thank you by the way for the help – I really needed someone to pick this apart as I seem to be going round in circles!

Because I couldn't find a Maud listed on the 1911 I was hoping it might be someones middle name or my Nan getting confused as Maud runs thriugh her family quite a lot!

It certainly has the correct kind of job for George..

Did Harold name any of his children similar names to any of this family?

Ramona

Ramona Report 6 Apr 2010 21:34

Harold's first daugher with May was called May Violet and then with my Nan he had Harold, Albert, Joan (Jane) Ronald and Raymond. So really just the Aruther is matched.

Thats the listing I have been looking at, also there is a baptist record that I thought could be connected.

Have you found her on 1911 to see if that 1911 Harold was near her at all?

A fall from scaffolding may be ?

Possibly George from 1911 and would make him deceased in 1926...

I would send for the Harold Thomas Tucker birth in Souhwark just to discount it if nothing else .

It may have the correct birthdate on it even if the year is out, which does often happen..
My grandfather always said he was born in 1901,but was actually born in 1902.
I was lucky though as his surname is much more unusual than Tucker and he was easy to find..

Ramona

Ramona Report 6 Apr 2010 21:47

Yes, he seemed to be pretty much around the St Olave/Lambeth district!

No I couldn't find much on May, only that her Father was called Alfred Thomas Moore and that Frederick Robert was a possible a brother?

Ramona

Ramona Report 6 Apr 2010 21:49

I think I am going to have to send off for it, and keep my fingers crossed that the birth dates match. Thank you for all your help, really its is appreciated.

I know what you mean, the other side of my family have an incredibly rare surname - much easier sometimes!!

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 6 Apr 2010 21:49

What was Alfreds job?I will have a search for them..

Sometimes it is good to bounce your findings off someone else,I find it helps me.

And its my pleasure to try and help, especially someone who has hung around to answer questions and who says thank you!

On the marriage lines he is listed as a Dock Labourer.

The address in 1926 was Abbey Street, Bermondsey

And then by the ages it has OX??

The George on that is a Carman also!
