Any help welcome on this one. Joseph departed 4th May 1911 aboard SS Tunisian from Liverpool to Quebec, Canada. I need him back in Colchester, Essex before 4th Sept 1912 to marry my gran. He has been very elusive, I cannot find anything about him except born Liverpool 1883 and on 1901 census, so if any kind soul can help, I luv yer to bits, Derek in France

Derek,

There's no Joseph Kays on that ship for that date.

Closest name is Jas Kaye but he's Belgian.

Hi Rose,

I took a look at the 4 May 1911 trip on FMP, but didn't see the Belgian bit. Did you look somewhere other than FMP, or is it just that we searched using different criteria?

The Joseph Kaye or Kays (last letter not clear) listed when I searched is on ticket no 45910 age 24, ticked in the column headed "unmarried/unaccompanied by a spouse" but interestingly also on the "Aliens" page, which states that these passengers are holding prepaid through tickets and are people for whom security has been given that they will leave for somewhere outside the UK. If this is the man, it might explain why he cannot be found on the 1911 census.

Hey folks slow down to a gallop, please. Yes my gran is Alice Bannock born Colchester in 1877 and my mum Dorotyh Kayes born 1916 also Colchester.
You will have noticed the added "e" to Kays, unusual, yes, but strangely enough another of grans sisters added a letter to her surname after her marriage (another story). I do thank you all for your ideas, cross questioning, etc, I certainly did not expect so many observations so rapidly after posting.
Rose, where is hat bit about aliens, please. Lindsey, you have the correct names and Rose you have his birth. So now my friends, where is he? luv, Derek

If Rose's finding on the 1911 Devon census is to be identified with the 18 year old boarding with the Gooch family in Wavertree in 1901, then I wonder if that Joseph married Rhoda Lampshire in Devonport in 1913?

Joseph Kayes 1913 Lampshire Devonport Devon
Rhoda W Lampshire 1913 Kayes Devonport Devon

Rhoda is shown on the 1901 census as born in Cornwall about 1889 (.... deleted).

Derek, do you have any other info which led you to match Alice Bannock with the Joseph who was born in Liverpool in 1883?

(Added) I see that the Joseph is Devon in 1911 was a Royal Navy seaman b Waverton Lancs - so if he could crew on a voyage, he might not be on passenger lists?

Derek

Derek Report 2 Apr 2010 14:49

Thats it Ivy, completely wrecked my thinking, but yes you could be right. Only one thing on my side, a marriage cert for my gran and Joseph Kays of Wavertree (in 1901); This hunt for my grandad gets more complex every time I try to find a result. Thanks for your continued help, luv yer, Derek

Hi Derek,

Apologies, have been looking in only intermittently.

Don't give up hope - I don't see any mention anywhere in the UK of a Rhoda Kay*s, or a birth of a Kay*s with mother's maiden name Lampshire, so I'm not convinced Joseph settled down with Rhoda.

I had a look for Phil*p Gooch's marriage, hoping that Joseph might be boarding with a relative, and was pleased to find a marriage in Liverpool in 1896 to Mary Hannah Kayes.

Since Phil*p's wife is older than Joseph, you might have better luck tracing an older generation by following Mary?

Probably ought to log off for a while - will look in again later, good luck.
