Perchino,
in essence you are correct. Kronstadt was/is a harbour as Archangel..
Russia needed craftsmen so all sorts of people came to work.
In my case chocolate - sorry for you - was not the connection. It gave my grandfather however after the Revolution the possibility to find a new life in Holland. For many years Holland had several famous chocolate fabrics.
Indeed the history of trades could be of interest. But I found just a few publications. Even passengers-list are mostly focused on America, Australia.

More details then I knew before. Thanks.
The name must be really English. In French or Russian e.g.hardly pronounceable.
My family kept the spelling Hide and used very often Charles/Karl as first given name.
In Russia one use to speak of "Charles, son of..."
So the second given name gives me no help to find who is who when I have no more details.

This new factory (ab)use the name Landrin giving the impression that they continue the original Georg Landrin Chocolatier in St.Petersburg.
Georg Landrin however founded in 1848 in St.-Petersburg a factory that became well known all over Russia. My late grandfather was one of the last directors before the Russian Revolution.
Today this factory, still in the same building, is called Azart-The first integrated candy-factory.

Russia: Confectionery Firm Landrin Builds 15 Mln Euro Plant in Pushkino
Source: FLEXNEWS
25/09/2007

25 September 2007 - Landrin group, who's director-general, Igor Markitantov, was a distributor for Ferrero in northwest Russia before creating Landrin, has invested 15 million euro in its Pushkino facility to manufacture chocolate wafer type sweets, similar to Ferrero's “Raffaello” and “Ferrero Rocher” brands.
-
Boris Prokchorov, business manager for the Landrin group, informs FLEXNEWS that the facility, which is supplied with first class equipment acquired from Italy and Austria and has completely automated production lines, has been operational since April 2007.

Established in 2003, Landrin’s main brands are “Petrushka” chocolate eggs, “Soulmate”, “Brave Soldiers”, etc. The group also has contracts with animation studios such as Disney and Sony Animation.

Landrin’s annual turnover is estimated at USD 100 million.

I have several Charles. My late grandfather e.g. was a Charles as well but had as second name Louis. He was one of the directors of the then famous Landrin -factory (sweets and chocolate). Still excisting but with a different name.
But one of the "first " 2 Charles , was "translator"at the Papermill Fabric at Peterhof, later presumably manager at the textile manufactury of Jonathan Thorton. The other one was a "porzellanmeiste", according to the family story , and had a high/good position at the Imperial Porcelain Fabric in St.Petersburg.

Rather recently I found out that William Richard Hide - later starting to spell the name as Hyde - emigrated with his family to New Zealand. I found several generations, but sofar not living persons any more.

Alexander Report 25 Mar 2010 21:42

I know, still the family-story goes that the Hide`s - at least this branch - came from England being craftsmen. Rather soon they joined/used the British Chaplaincy. After marrying women from Riga they became interested in Lutheran Church and started to speak German as well.
I still wonder that so few information is availlable of English men/women who went to Russia.

This most interesting surname is a variant of "Hide", which has two possible origins. Firstly, it may be a topographical surname for the "holder of a hide", which described someone who lived on and farmed a piece of land originally named as a "hide of land" from the Olde English pre 7th Century "hi(gi)d". A hide was quite a substantial amount for those days, varying from sixty to one hundred and twenty acres. It seems to have been originally fixed as the amount of land necessary to support one extended family, as the Olde English word for a household, "higan", would seem to suggest a common etymology with "hi(gi)d". The name may also be a variant of the personal feminine name "Ida", with the inorganic "h" usually added to names beginning with a vowel. Avice atte Hyde was recorded in 1296 in the Subsidy Rolls of Sussex. Interesting namebearers include Edward Hyde (1609 - 1674), first earl of Clarendon, who was a supporter of Charles 1 and became secretary of state, lord chancellor and chief advisor to Charles 11 at the Restoration. Edward Hyde, Esq. popularly known as Lord Cornbury, was appointed Captain General and Governor-in-Chief of New York in 1701. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Robert de la Hyda, which was dated 1188, in the "Pipe Rolls of Dorset", during the reign of King Henry 11, known as "The Builder of Churches", 1154 - 1189. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

Hi there, many thanks for this very long and detailed list.. However sorry to say that most of it I know already. Nevertheless I certainly will check the details.

The main question remains, where was the first Charles born? It most have been in England , there are reasons to believe around 1782 but where?

Thanks for any support.
