Oops! Learn somthing new everyday..
The IGI is being very helpful at the moment :D

I'm using Ancestry for the census' (Although I only have one day left of my membership) and also using the family search website.

Thats a hard one Talia, as it often is the further you get back!

However I thought I saw on one census he was saying he was born Dedham Essex! Which site are you using for your census, are you looking at the original pages?

I did find these born to a James & Elizabeth Rudge Stepney

James 1809
Ann 1810
Henry 1813
Mary 1813
John 1815

I had a quick search on Henry 1813 on the 1841 and he is also a shoemaker and living same place as James.....a connection?

County - not country.

1841 asks if born in county or not. He was not born in Middx. He could have been born in Kent. And back then, Kent was much closer to Middx than it is now.

Have a rummage for him on the IGI ...

My mistake, it all adds up.
When I looked it at I thought that Thomas Rudge was born out of the country which he wasn't.

I found the 1851 census for James Rudge now which matches up with the 1841 you found as theyre living on the same road. One says he was born out of the country and the other doesn't.. Is there any way of finding out where he was really from?

Talia,

Am not really with you on your last post, have you looked at the 1841 result I posted, and do you think that is the incorrect family?

Just noticed on the 1841 census that I found for Thomas Rudge, it appears he was born out of the country to.. However on the 1851 it says he was born in Kent..? The James Rudge 1841 matches up with Thomas, but everything else doesnt. :\

Talia,

This could be the Rudge family in 1841

Parnaham Street, St Ann Limehouse ,Tower Hamlets Middlesex

James Rudge 1786 born out of county shoemaker
Elizabeth Rudge 1786 born Middlesex
Emma Rudge 1821 born MIDDLESEX
Jane Rudge 1827 born Middlesex

Play around in the familysearch site. Once you get to grips with it it is so useful.

When you want to find siblings of a child you click on the number beginning with C at the bottom left. Fill out mum and dad's forenames in the boxes that pop up and hit return.

You should then get a list of children with those parents. With Carter being a fairly common name they may not all be yours - but check them out. If they follow a logical pattern over a finite period of years they could well be siblings. Sometimes you get a really long list and have to work out which are the possible/likely siblings.

The eldest sibling will give you some indication of when the parents might have married (assuming they married before the first child was born!) and that would make it easier to track down a possible marriage. Also, working out when the eldest child was born/baptised would give you more of an idea of the parents' ages and therefore make it easier to see if you can find them on the censuses.

Talia,

The info Mrs Grumpy gave you regarding the Christening record of Louisa, if you take her advice and do a parent search on the IGI, you may find other siblings.........this will maybe allow you to find the carter family on the 1841..........there is a James & Sarah Carter on the 1841 in Stepney although he is not listed as a butcher at that time.

Bit of a stupid question.. But how do I do that? I'm not very good with the IGI thingy and I don't yet know who Louisa's siblings are.

Jill 2011 (aka Warrior Princess of Cilla!) Report 19 Jan 2010 22:19

Check out Louisa's siblings on the IGI. That will give you some idea of when her parents married.

Carter is a fairly common name so it can be a bit of a struggle.

Rudge is probably a bit rarer so he might be easier.

Just managed to find the 1841 Rudge/Carter Census with you guys help! Thank you :)

I'm still having trouble finding Thomas & Louisa whilst they were still living with their parents though, So far I only know their parents names.. I really would like to find out where they were from and the years they were born.

EDIT:
So far I know that Thomas Rudge was born 1818 in Kent, to James Rudge and Elizabeth unknown, also unknown what years they were born.

Louisa Carter was born 1821 in Stepney, to James Carter and Sarah Unknown, Also unknown what years they were born.

Her baptism is on the IGI - familysearch - so you should be able to pick up the siblings as well.

Looks like the family on the 1841 Middlesex with Thomas Jnr aged 2, so search on him and you will find them.

Glitter Baby, yes that is the family, it took me ages to find that one!
S Rudge would of been my 3x great nan.
No idea why it says "british subject" though.. from the other census I found it said that they were from Kent or somthing.
