My mistake, it all adds up.
When I looked it at I thought that Thomas Rudge was born out of the country which he wasn't.

I found the 1851 census for James Rudge now which matches up with the 1841 you found as theyre living on the same road. One says he was born out of the country and the other doesn't.. Is there any way of finding out where he was really from?

County - not country.

1841 asks if born in county or not. He was not born in Middx. He could have been born in Kent. And back then, Kent was much closer to Middx than it is now.

Have a rummage for him on the IGI ...

Thats a hard one Talia, as it often is the further you get back!

However I thought I saw on one census he was saying he was born Dedham Essex! Which site are you using for your census, are you looking at the original pages?

I did find these born to a James & Elizabeth Rudge Stepney

James 1809
Ann 1810
Henry 1813
Mary 1813
John 1815

I had a quick search on Henry 1813 on the 1841 and he is also a shoemaker and living same place as James.....a connection?

Oops! Learn somthing new everyday..
The IGI is being very helpful at the moment :D

I'm using Ancestry for the census' (Although I only have one day left of my membership) and also using the family search website.
