I have Isabella Thomson who married Allan Anderson 16-05-1830, I would like to know who Isabellas parents were but SP Births and Marriages start from 1855. Is there any way I can find out who her parents were?

On SP there is also this that she may be on.

Old Parish Registers
Births & Baptisms 1538-1854
» Banns & Marriages 1538-1854
» Deaths & Burials 1538-1854

Lots of Scottish parish records on familysearch site too.

Have you found her on the census after her marriage to find her DOB and POB?

Potty

Potty Report 17 Nov 2009 12:46

Is where you got her marriage from - IGI submitted record - submitted records are not always correct:

ISABELL THOMPSON Pedigree
Marriages:
Spouse: ALLAN ANDERSON Family
Marriage: 16 MAY 1830 Kenmore, Perth, Scotland

But this is an extracted one - not sure how far Kenmore is from Fortingall:

ISABEL THOMSON Pedigree
Marriages:
Spouse: ALLAN ANDERSON Family
Marriage: 15 MAY 1830 Fortingall, Perth, Scotland

Viv and Potty,
Thank you. I have another thread for a census lookup for their children, and according to that she was born in Temon, Perthshire c1807.

Potty

Potty Report 17 Nov 2009 13:15

Yes, I saw your other thread - I think Temon must be a mistranscription - I can't find it in Perthshire. Could you look at the original image on scotlandspeople?

There are several Isabel Thompsons born around the right time in Perthshire but no way of telling which might be yours.

Do you know when she died? I have a feeling Scottish death certs give parents' names.

Potty,
I looked on SP for a death and got - Isabella Thomson previously Anderson, she was married to David Thomson. It wasn't the same person.

You are quiet correct Potty. Scottish death certificates (after 1855, when registration began) give the name and occupation of the father and name and maiden surname of the mother if the informant knew them. Female deaths can be searched using both the married surname and the maiden surname as a cross reference.

EDIT

Have you looked for the marriage on the OPRs at Scotlandspeople? Sometimes OPR marriages give the names of the bride and groom's fathers.

Sandra

Sandra Report 17 Nov 2009 13:37

Just had a look on SP OPR but nothing comes up.

rootgatherer Report 17 Nov 2009 13:55

The OPRs are mainly Church of Scotland records so they may have married in a different church eg United Free, Roman Catholic etc.

They don't seem to appear on a census record after 1851 so they may have died before compulsory registration began in 1855. If they remained in the same area it may be that you have to look for burial records.

I have a death cert on SP for Jessie Anderson, she died 10-01-1904 (Aged 69) in Greenock, her parents are Allan and Isabella.

Sandra

Nothing on burials either. (on SP)
I give up now.

The Fortingall marriage is coming up on scotlandspeople - I don't have any credits to view it.

Sandra, you didn't say where you got the marriage in your original post from. I think that the Fortingall one I found is correct. I have checked and Fortingall and Kenmore are very close together. Kenmore marriages for that time are on the IGI (batch No M113605 1824-1855 ) and there is no Isabel Thomson/Allan Anderson marriage listed.

Sandra Report 17 Nov 2009 14:53

Potty,
I got it from familysearch.
I'll have a look at the one you found on SP.
Thank you.

Potty,
I'm doing something wrong, I can't get Isabella and Allans marriage up on SP?

Potty

Potty Report 17 Nov 2009 15:09

Just checked again on scotlandspeople and a marriage IS coming up in Kenmore! In fact both the marriages from familysearch are there. It is a bit of a coincidence for two couples with the same names to mary in adjacent villages within two days!

Potty,
are you looking on OPR ?

Potty

Potty Report 17 Nov 2009 15:10

Are you sure you are searching under Old Parish Registers - the column with the blue background?

Sandra

Sandra Report 17 Nov 2009 15:11

I have tried on OPR (SP)
I put Perth and all Parishes and still nothing comes up.

Potty,
I have sent you a PM.
