I have searched Findmypast + Ancestry 1871 England Census already for a year for my 2x gr grandfather William STRIPP (Streap, Strip, Streape etc) born c1810 in Horne, Surrey. I have not found him. I have him in 1841/51/61. He died in 1873, so my missing census is 1871.
Is there a kind soul out their who has a subscription to The Genealogist who could help me out?
If so, please let me know and I will give you all details.
Many thanks, Rebecca

Can you give us some more details and maybe we can find him on the 1871 on Ancestry. The Genealogist has strict rules about doing lookups for others and I believe "Fine" people if they think they are doing so.
Who and when did William marry? Who were his children and when were they born?

Have you found any of the children in 1871?
Findmypast has this entry for 1871 STRIPP, William 1864 7 M Epsom Surrey But not managed to find it on Ancestry. Got no credits left on FMP to check it out
Also showing this entry STRIPP, Sarah 1857 14 F Epsom Surrey
Could there be two families with that surname
Also this entry STRIPP, Alice N M 1870 1 F Epsom Surrey This one has parents of William and Charlotte
Three entries for a family in Godstone
1871 could be another family ? Name: Sarah Stipp Age: 14 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1857 Relation: Daughter Father's Name: Marthe Mother's Name: Corwline Gender: Female Where born: Sutton, Surrey, England Civil parish: Sutton Ecclesiastical parish: St Nicholas County/Island: Surrey Country: England Registration district: Epsom Sub-registration district: Carshalton ED, institution, or vessel: 11 Household schedule number: 218 Household Members: Name Age Marthe Stipp 56 Corwline Stipp 39 - Caroline Jone Stipp 31 Sarah Stipp 14 William Stipp 7 Emma Stipp 4 William Gorder 45 Stripp on image. Matthew is a gardener
Oh well back to the drawing board

Hi Glitter Baby,
Thanks for all your searches. Those that you mentioned for possible children have all been followed up by me in the past and unfortunately don't match up.
I have not managed to find any of his children in the 1871 census, either as they were born later or just not possible to find them...... so frustrating. I've researched many of the Stripp families in and around the area and have them all in my tree via their distant links to my direct line. Still no joy on my line.
Regards, Rebecca

These are the only Stripps in West Street in 1971. Already established they're the wrong family though.

I have looked at every image for District 11 Sutton (the district covering West Street) and the only Stripps on there are the family GB found (who were living in West St) and a Susan working as a servant. Was the Charles b1870 also born in West Street?

Looking at the 1971 Stripps West street the wife looks too young to have had John so Matthew was probably married before? Could he be a William Matthew? It looks definitely like the same family with the West Street connection.

Yes Potty, Charles Andrew Stripp was also born on West Street on 27 Aug 1870. So where did he go between this date and 2 Apr 1871????? His death on 16 Jan 1873 is also recorded at West Street...........

Barry,
I'd say there must be a connection somewhere. I have a couple of Hannah Stripp's in my tree, but not yours. Horne and Lingfield are close, so there must be a connection as the name is indeed rare.

Andrew,
Thanks. I should not have missed that census record as James Page married Eleanor (Ellen) Stripp who was William's sister!! So looks like William's daughter Ellen Dora Stripp born 11 Jul 1862 was staying with her aunt Ellen in 1871. The Charles Gibbs mentioned in this census was Eleanor's son from a previous marriage to a Charles Gibb (no s) Sr.
Best wishes, Rebecca

Barbara,
I agree that Caroline looks too young to be mother of John Stripp. I don't believe that William had a middle name of Matthew. The profession of gardener and birthplace are also wrong. I've tried to find info on this Matthew, but no baptism on Familysearch and no parish records online. I've not been able to trace this Matthew in 41/51/61 or 81 census material....... what is going on here????? Children Sarah and William could be those I know as Sarah Ann Stripp b1858 Lingfield and William Leonard Stripp b1865 Sutton. I don't know who the John and Emma are. I found one birth on FreeBMD for a John Stripp b1842 Godstone Distr. and no Emma Stripp born circa 1867....
Anyone any thoughts on the above.
And thanks to everyone who has replied to this thread. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Barbara,
I have this family in my tree (Richard, Mary and their daughter Margery).
Richard Stripp 1815 Horne married Mary Carey 1813 Reigate. If John b1841 was Richard's nephew then he would be the son of one of Richard's 2 brothers who appear in my tree, either William Stripp b1820 East Grinstead District or Edward Stripp b1822 East Grinstead District.
Mary Carey b1813 died in 1865. I'm wondering whether Richard remarried to a Caroline and for some reason his name appears as Matthew in the 1871 census. This calls for more investigation. Off to see what I can find. Back soonest.

Oops, I have Richard Stripp b1815 dying in Q2 1870 Godstone District, so it can't be him in the 1871 census with Caroline.....
