Did James and Rose divorce? Have you found either of them on either the 1911 census for England or Ireland?

When do you think James came to England/

Unsure if there was a divorce! One would assume so, but no details.
Yes have found Rose & family living with her parents with 4 children. Address Garfield Place Ballymena Co. Antrim N. Ireland. 1911 census
N.Ireland.

If James wasn't wityh Rose in 1911, then there is one about the correct age on the 1911 cnsus living in West Derby. If you also look on FreeBMD there are a few possible marriages in the Liverpool area for James McCaig. I don't see a divorce on the National Archives site for him but then he may have divorced in Ireland. Then again, he may not have remarried until after Rose's death but just lived with someone who was known as Mrs. McCaig - not uncommon in the early 1900s as divorce was more difficult and expensive than nowadays.

Hi, this is all great information and looks as though I might be able to track James down when I get a look at the marriage certificate.
Oh by the way, James also had a nickname, ( Skipper ), presumably he may have worked on the boats around Liverpool area. Do you know of a way that I could research to possibly find a listing of places where he may have been employed? Thanks again very much.

I can't see a possible for James on the 1901 census but perhaps he was at sea.

There is this possible for Rose - does the age fit with what you have from the 1911 Irish census?

Hello again, I don't think this fits, in 1911 census Rose was 33yrs old which gives her a D.O.B. of 1878.
I think I see Rose living with her parents in Westbourne St Everton West Derby. Lancs, in 1891 at age 13yrs, although the search records show 18 yrs I think this is an error, What do you think, I'd value your comments very much.
Thanks once more.

I have had a look at that 1891 census and yes that does look like your Rose. Have you found her in 1901 yet? That one that I posted earlier seems the only likely one on Ancestry. Given that David's birth was registered in the Sep. qtr., it seems likely that she would have been in the area at the time of the census (the night of the 31st March). Then again maybe she was in Ireland and came back to Liverpool for the birth.

EDIT

Sorry David was born in 1900 - oh! I do need to waken up!!

Hello my Friend, I've just received the marriage register of James & Rose. Some interesting information, James was a widower & listed mariner as an occupation. He was 32 years old at marriage date of 26/01/1904which confirms his birthdate of 1872. Rose was 26yrs old & also confirms her birthdate.
James's father was also called James and his occupation is listed as a farmer.
This looks to me like 99% that this is my grandfather, do you agree?. I'm trying to check up on David to see if I can confirm his details, I've found an entry for David Boal Mc Caig, West Derby. 8b 447July aug Sept 1990, looks like David I think. I'll probably have to get certificate to confirm.
All this has now raised another issue, Did James have any children to his first wife, plus I believe he re-married after Rose died.
Talk again soon. Thanking you once again for your kind support.

Hi Pollock

This is all looking quite exciting! As soon as I get a chance I'll have a look for an earlier marriage for James - although he may have married in Ireland first time. It may be worth looking on the record pilot site for a female McCaig death within the correct timescale. The downside is that Irish certificates don't give very much information. I recently bought a certificate for my greataunts death but it wasn't hers. The only way I knew this was that the husband's occupation was totally wrong but the certificate didn't even give her husband's name!! This seems to be the norm for then as my Greatgrandmother, on her death certificate was described only as "widow of an Iron Founder".
