I am trying to track down details of my Grand Fathers first marriage. He was born Lancelot William Mills in Snderland in 1901. I believe he married a Theresa Bellerby in approz 1920/1921. He nrxt appears to have married again without getting divorced in Amble Northumberland as James William Semore. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Robyn Report 1 Sep 2009 17:38

We only found when he went to apply for a passport and there was no birth record. So his password said James William Seymour also known as Lancelot William Mills. He was very secretive about his first marriage

assume you know he had three children from his first marriage?

Robyn

Robyn Report 1 Sep 2009 17:51

I know nothing. Some details would be greatly appreciated as would details if Theresa Bellerby remarried. My daughter and I have only just started tracking him down. We know nothing apart from the information you have supplied us. Anything else would be greatly appreciated

Have you a copy of his birth certificate, which might offer some sort of explanation as to surnames?

1911 census - he appears to be in an 'Institution' with children of a similar age - possibly a school? You will need credits to view.

Excuse me if I'm just being thick.............but most of the boys are scholars and 4 are down as barrow......what does Barrow mean?

Robyn

Robyn Report 1 Sep 2009 21:10

Wow - thanks to all.

One of the stories that has been handed down is that my GF's mother fell out with her husband and gave my GF to his father to look after because she went off with another man. He was seemingly brought up in a Seamans mission because his father was a sailor. Another interesting thread to pursue. I have ordered his birth certificate so maybe then I can track down his mother and father

Hi Francis

There is a piece about the orphanage which makes good reading on

www.wearsideonline.com/sunderland_orphanage.html

Moody Blue, I wonder if --on the original scan--it says Boarder and not Barrow as transcibed ! Just a thought not a certainty.

I have now got a copy of Lancelots birth certificate and am now want to track his parents and siblings down

Father William Mills born in Marlerybone in 1865
Mother Alice Duff born in West Hartlepool in 1875

PS

What are the best sites to use ?

Potty

Potty Report 8 Sep 2009 16:22

Francis, how do you know from the birth cert when and where his parents' were born. That info isn't on English birth cert.

You can use the freebmd site to find his parents' marriage, the cert should give their ages, and Ancestry to find them on the census

Robyn

Robyn Report 8 Sep 2009 16:26

I got that from the 1901 census. But from the information on the census I can not track either of the parents. Sorry

I cannot find a marriage for a William Mills to an Alice Duff. Is there any indication on the birth cert that she may have been married before? It would be something like Alice Mills fomerly Duff late Smith.

Robyn

Robyn Report 8 Sep 2009 16:56

No it just gives the name Alice Duff.

Potty

Potty Report 8 Sep 2009 17:10

This is the only marriage I can find on freebmd (and confirmed on Sunderland bmd site (http://www.sunderland.gov.uk/pages/registrars/) for a William Mills married to and Alice:
