Went to pick up a poss 1838 birth this morning at the registrars in Mold, the usual friendly person was in the office, I asked her would she mind confirming the parents of Florence Colley 1911 whilst in the vault, she did and it is Samuel and Florence.

Children born to a married woman are assumed to be the children of her husband, even if he has been dead for many years.


She may also be saying that she is a Widow because it looks better to the neighbours!



I should buy that birth certificate ...... it is the only way to find out what it says re the father. But don't be surprised if the children turn out to be illegitimate!

I would wait before you spend too much time on searching, to get proof of Florences parents from hawarden. However if it is Samuel we are after we know his birth date from the 1911 index (1883)

I have just searched the 1901 1883+/- 2 years, and I would fancy the one in Chester...........only because Sealand is a hop skip and jump from Hawarden.

Samuel Colley comes up on the 1901 census, however on the 1891 census there are two that could be him. So the 1901 census may not be him. How can I tell which one he is?

Yes I think she did have quite a lot of brothers, sisters and also half brothers and sisters but I didn't know any of them.

Looks like it may be Florence Fairhurst and Samuel Colley are the likely parents, they appear on the 1911 census, of course without Florence Jnr but rather than speculate give Hawarden record office a call, they are very helpful and will get back to you with the info you need, they will have her baptism if she was baptised at Hawarden.
