wow that is really one interesting journey of discovery... fraught with frustration I'll bet but so engaging. It is things like this that have got me hooked on trying to unravel a larger picture of the family tree... not just a list of names and dates but the other details that give you more of an idea of what they may have been like.
I have just been send a copy of an Illuminated address that was done for my greatgreat grandfather when he left his position as an Iron works manager in the West Bromwich area. I would love to see the original in person but it is definately interesting reading.
Oh yes thanks to you I have now found that illusive Sheridan that came from ireland... he just happens to have been two genenerations further back than anyone though born around 1797 in Ireland. If the family story is to be believed he is the one that came from a family with money and had a falling out with them and came to England never to have contact with them again! but you know how family stories go!

What? He's from Ireland and had money?

Why, we may be cousins yet!

I wonder how many black sheep younger brothers those Viscounts Monck may have had ...

That one was the best, I'll tell ya. Kept me busy for two years - still goin at it. Otherwise, I might have found this stuff boring, and never learned all the tricks to use on people like your Paytons. ;)

Yep it looks as if I may have to pay a visit to ireland to get back much further... I have one branch on the Sheridan side and another on the Payton all hailing from ireland. It is a good excuse for a holiday I think... I am amazed at just how many links I have come up with since you kindly helped me, I have contacted and been contacted by almost a dozen people with similar links in their trees!
It is going to take me ages to sort out all the information that is coming in! Nothing for what seemed like years and since joining this site and ancestry I can't keep track of all the positve results! (not complaining though!).
I am treating the story of the family coming from money simply as a story... you know how things get twisted and exaggerated down the years. Maybe the only true bit was that he came from Ireland. Only time will tell....
