In 1871, there's a son called William Calvert too.

Let us know what the birth cert. says.

Next door to the Walkers in 1881 is a William Calvert.

Something to think about.

I have my mothers birth cert which was a short one. It was only after research I found her parents didnt marry till she was 14 months old.

I then found mum registered under her mothers name and under her fathers surname. Both had the same registration number

Margaret

you must have what is known as the short form of certificate, which has a limited amount of information on it.

The copy of the original, which you can buy for £7, will show the father's name, the mother's name and her maiden name, where the baby was born and where they lived.

Get the information on your father's birth registration from www.freebmd.org ... this is a free site

this is what you should find:-

Births Jun 1908 (>99%)

Middlemas Thomas Simpson Chester le S. 10a 702a

This means that his birth was registered in the June quarter of 1908, and the set of 2 numbers after Chester le S are the GRO reference numbers

Go to www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

Follow the instructions for buying certificates.

Answer YES when asked if you ahve the GRO reference numbers

Each certificate costs £7

Hi again,Choccy.
Many thanks for the 1871 info. This is where we get into problems. Her marriage cert (1905) gives her father as William Calver Wilson, profession butler, deceased. It looks as if she may have been brought up by her grandmother.
I didn't realise that birth certificates from this time gave the mother's name as my father's for 1908 only gives name,DOB, entry , date of registrationand distirict. Is this then, not a full cert?
Regards, Margaret

To Choccy.
Many thanks for the info, it helps to cross check what I have found. I know who her father is from the marriage certificate but her mother is a complete mystery.
I actually met her brother, gt Uncle Willy and I went to his wife's funeral when I was about 3.

Dear Jill, thanks for your message. We are lucky that my sister actually has Dad's birth cert. We have found with others the difficulties of getting correct dates.
I never cease to be amazed by the kind help of people like yourself.

To Glitter Baby.
Many thanks Maureen, this checks out so hopefully I can continue the search for her parents. Her mother is very elusive.
Unfortunately Alice died in Jan 1920 when my father was only 11. All who had any knowledge of her are long dead.
Best wishes, Margaret

You have to work out what time of year your father was born against the date of the census. Can't remember offhand teh date of the 1911 but it would be around the end of March/beginning of April. They would put his age down. When it's transcribed they just knock that number of years off 1911 to give an estimated year of birth.

Thanks very much Choccy. Interestingly my father's birth(Thomas Simpson) was actually in 1908 but it must be the sanme family as his sister's name and year are correct .
