The reason I thought Adam was Mary's father is that her brother Adam b1816 had parents Adam & Betty. from Radcliffe.
In the IGI.
That Adam b 1817 b Radcliffe in the 1871 which you found fits the IGI Adam Bapt.1816 and seems to fit and with all the census... That Mary's mother Betty Resided.

Never mind I will chase around for Mary's Baptism.

If Betty is Mary's mother, then I do NOT think that Adam is Mary's father


....... he's listed as Betty's son in every census that shows relationships!


You may never find her father for certain ....... but this Adam is not him

Looks more so than Abel.....now that Adam has been found in the 1861 & 1871..

PS forgot to say Mary had a daughter called Betsy hence the granddaughter that Betty had living with her in the 1871. census

I was not able to view 1841 yesterday and asked for help and when I saw (Dyer) I assumed it was a mistranslation.

Well we cant all be perfect.....!! ...I sure am not..

Thank you for your interest,
I have Mary Meadowcroft in the 1851 census and she is living with her mother Betty in Holcombe Tottington lower end. Betty a Widow.
But no brothers !!

I have looked for them in 1851 to no avail only one Adam and he was too young.

Its so complicated I'm going around in circles.
Couldn't understand why the brothers or nephews were down as Dyer. in 1841 mind boggles....

Just a thought. If you look for the other Meadowcroft boys on the 1851 census and get their correct ages remembering 1841 is rounded down. It will give their place of birth.
You can get one of their marriage certs to determine a father hoping of course they are sons and not nephews.

Have you found Betty on later census.? Is she with family ? Who is living next/near her?

Mary Meadowcroft b 1832 in the 1851 says she was born in Radcliffe Lancs.
They also lived in Tottington Lower end.
Her mother Betty was b 1791 in Elton Lancs Betty was a widow.
So its because of this that I'm not sure who the father is.

So the family that Netty found was the correct family. in 1841.

Also Mary's first child was named Joseph.as so was her brother.
But I cant seem to put a father.s name to her.

I did find Abel Meadowcroft Death1839, SO that was why I was wondering if her father was Abel Or Joseph after her brother


Maybe I should get the Baptism certificate for Mary as suggested.

Can you look for the family in 1851?
Is Mary a direct relative. Can you get her marriage cert to confirm her father?

I thought looking at the 1841 Census that Adam was more likely to be her brother than her father .... Betty is 50, he's 25, which meant he would have been between 15 and 19 when Mary was born.


The problem with the 1841 is that it does not tell you the relationships between people living in the same house. Also, ages for adults over the age of 15 are rounded down to nearest 5.



If you go to the International Genealogical Index on www.familysearch.org, you will see that there are several Mary Meadowcroft, mother Betty born in Bury between about 1830 and 1835

One has father Thomas

another has father Josiah


I couldn't find one father Adam
