I am trying to find info on my gg grandfather Henry Hansford Gregory, C1856 Southampton.

There is someone with this name mentioned 4 times on the NY passenger list on Ancestry. As I only have an Essentials membership so I am unable to view the details. I would be grateful if someone could let me know what information there is.

Could be his grandson with the same name born 1905, West Derby,Liverpool.

Hi Libby

There is a site called ellisisland.org which lists passenger lists for New York which is free to search, you just need to register to view the image.

Hopefully this may be of some use to you.

Have checked with the Ellis Island site. Can not see any info for Henry Hansford Gregory.

Is the info on Ancestry the same as on the Ellis Island site?

Many thanks for that Cassidy. Thought it would be the one for C1905 but was hoping for C1856, who disappeared after 1871 census until 1901 census, and has gone again in the 1911. Most of my Gregory ancestors were mariners.

Sorry for not getting back sooner - had an unexpected visitor.

That's interesting about his missing fingers...will add this to my info

There are more entries for Henry 1905 as a crew member working his way up the "Ladder" as a waiter. He is under the name Harry Gregory same height, same weight. From Liverpool to New York.A lot of" Henry's" also used the name Harry.

Libby

Libby Report 19 Jan 2009 11:38

Hi again Cassidy

No, my Henry C1856 was born in Southampton, father William Henry Ragget Gregory.

Wish I could still afford the new sub to the full Ancestry collection - hubby out of work since July. Really miss it. Only this hobby keeping me sane.

Thanks again for the info

I've found a Henry Gregory c 1858 born England sailing on a Ship named "England"sailing from Liverpool and Queenstown Ireland for the U.S.A,arriving 10th August 1880.

Cassidy....you are a star.

Have traced William Henry Ragget, his wife Harriet and the rest of their children all the way through the census until their deaths, in case my Henry was living with them - with no luck.

Have found a marriage for Henry Hansford Gregory to Elizabeth Nicholls in Cardiff in 1882. His wife was known as Annie so not sure if this is the one. When I can afford it I will send off for this cert. Their children were born in 1877,1879,1882 and 1884...can not find these births either (tried under Gregory and Nicholls).

I'll have a look for you.

Cassidy

Cassidy Report 19 Jan 2009 12:42

Can you give me some of the childrens names and where born ?.

Libby

Libby Report 19 Jan 2009 12:54

Hi Cassidy

Children of Henry Hansford Gregory and Annie

C1876/1878 Frederick Thomas (my g grandfather

C1878/1879 Charles Frederick Gregory

C1882 Amy/Emmie Gregory. Always known as Amy but appears
1911 census as Emmie.

C1884 William Gregory.

First siting of them in Litherland,Liverpool was on the 1901 census. Henry Hansford Gregory on 1871 with parents.

There is a Henry Gregory on board the "Robert & Sarah" off Hambleside on the 1882 census but I have discounted this one.

All born Southampton according to family knowledge or according to census Salisbury.

Thanks again

C188

Hi,It's odd that none of the birth's can be found as it was law,to register after 1875.
I can only assume that they had a different surname. As you know, there were two ,possibly three birth's before the marriage.
have you any birth cert's..especially your Great Grandfather's ?If not I can only assume that they were born under a different Surname. It might be key to order that marriage cert.

Cassidy

Cassidy Report 19 Jan 2009 14:19

The two Henry Hansford Gregory births were registered so I'm more inclined to say [with the info available] that they were under another surname.

Hi Cassidy

I have thought the same as yourself for a while now. I even obtained a copy of Amys will, hoping it would shed some light on things, to no avail.

I have been in contact with William Gregory's (c1884) g grandson, he has no knowledge either.

Looks like I will have to order the 1882 marriage certificate from Cardiff when I can afford it.

Once again many thanks for your help. It is much appreciated.
