Mark - please reply in the thread and not by PM. It makes me (and all of us) nuts. If you look at the message you sent me, it doesn't even have a name in it! By tomorrow I'd have no clue what it was about.

And when you get your certs, be sure to post the info in the thread here so we can all see the outcome!

The child could be living with a married aunt (or older sister), is one possibility. You could use FreeBMD to try to find a marriage to check whether the wife in the couple has the same surname.

Good lord, AnnGG. Are those people actually related, or just random Tricketts??

(But won't you at least give *source URLs* when you copy such stuff?)

John Barber TRICKETT (1822-1867)
John Barber TRICKETT was baptised at Bradfield, Yorkshire on 21 April 1822. He was the son of John and Maria TRICKETT who lived at Storrs and his father's occupation is shown as 'Farmer'. In the 1841 Census he lived in Dronfield, Derbyshire where he was an 'Assistant' in a Boarding School.

On 13 January 1844 John Barber TRICKETT married Mary Ann Hydes at the Parish Church in Rotherham. On the Marriage Certificate he gives his profession as ‘School Master’ and his place of residence Rotherham. His Father’s name is given as John TRICKETT, a farmer. Mary Ann Hydes gives no occupation and her address as Dronfield in the County of Derby. Her Father’s name was Thomas Tarn Hydes and he was also a farmer.

It would appear that Mary Ann Hydes was baptised on 24 September 1820 in Dronfield but the 1851 Census gives her age as 29, suggesting a later birth year. In that Census we find John Barber TRICKETT (a schoolmaster aged 29), Mary Ann Trickett and John TRICKETT (aged 7) living with Mary Ann’s Mother, Elizabeth Hydes (aged 49). Elizabeth Hydes is referred to in the Census as ‘Farmer, Widow, Head of Household’. Also in the property in Coal Aston, Derbyshire is Thomas T Hydes (a farmer of 126 acres, aged 28), Harriet Hydes (aged 24), William Hydes (aged 22) and a George Roberts (born in Chesterfield in 1838 and referred to as ‘nephew’).

At this stage I do not know how many children John and Mary Ann had in addition to those set out in the 1861 Census.

John Thomas TRICKETT was born on 20 February 1844 at Hallows, Coalaston, Derbyshire. On 8 September 1870 her married Sarah Ann Wilson at St John's Church, Sheffield. Sarah Ann died at Outhtibridge on 18 August 1875 aged 29. A few months later, on 22 December 1875, John Thomas married Emily Mellor - Emily was a 21 year old spinster from Sheepbridge, Chesterfield. Like his father John was Registrar of Births and Deaths in Bradfield when he died, aged 38, on 14 March 1882.

William Henry TRICKETT was born on 22 December 1851. William died of tuberculosis on 21 November 1884 at St John's Road, Newbold, Chesterfield. He was only 33 years old and his daughter, my grandmother, was born six months after his death.

Arnold Hydes TRICKETT was born on 1 November 1856 at Cold Well, Onesacre, Bradfield in Yorkshire. After many hours of research I can find no trace of Arnold Hydes, other than a single reference to a Hydes Trickett, aged 15, living with his aunt (Elizabeth Hydes) at the time of the 1871 Census. In 1888 his brother George called one of his children after him.

George TRICKETT was born on 26 March 1860, also at Bradfield. There is no trace of George in the 1871 Census but in the 1881 Census he was a labourer, aged 21 and living with his mother. In 1886 George married Mary Elizabeth Champion in Sheffield and they had three children: Nellie born in 1887, Arnold Hydes born in 1888 and Blanche in 1890. There was no change in the family in either the 1891 or 1901 Censuses. George TRICKETT died on 1 April 1926 at Sheffield.

John Barber TRICKETT died on 29 September 1867 aged 45. The cause of death on his death certificate is given as 'Lumbar Meningitis'. Earlier in his life John had been a schoolteacher but on the 1861 Census, and his death certificate, John was Registrar of Births and Deaths for the Bradfield District of Wortley, County of West Riding. His death certificate is signed by the Deputy Registrar - his son John Thomas TRICKET, who took over the post from his father. John Barber TRICKETT was buried at Bradfield on 3 October 1867. Mary Ann was 63 when she died in 1884. She was buried at Bradfield on 10 April.

Yes, EtheR, I was just about to do that. ;)

Strange questions ...

EvieBeavie

EvieBeavie Report 8 Jan 2009 11:10

Er ... what?

You have Oswald's birth cert and it says his father was John.

Have you found them together in a census? That would give you an indication of when John was born.

You haven't said where this was. The default assumption is England, but one never knows.

A little more info? Maybe the mother's name? the location? Have you found the record of the marriage (since presumably you have both parents' names)?

What I'm not getting is how anyone would be able to confirm any of this ...
