It looks as though this couple didn't marry until after the 1901 census. Was she Florence Hook? |

I'd be inclined to wait a few more days until the 1911 census is available again. I suppose the last thing you want to know is that we were using it up until New Year's Eve but at least we know that this area is covered. |

Kim, have a look at this marriage, it does look quite promising but you would need to order a copy from the gro to check, |

thanks claire this is what we ended up with as well, few years back if this is the case and mccabe is my john belton,it has ended my line as there is no way of proving john belton was born,on that john mccabes birth cert it states father was policeman, and his name was john . my johns fathers name was samuel he could have taken samuels name but i got no way of proving it, if it is the case, and he was mccabe. are his descendants mccabe and not beltons, also this samuel had other children, can you see where this can of worms is going, if your up the wrong path, can you tell me how to prove it one way or the other thats why i was hoping for any lead gossip family story, just something to put me in right direction,, thanks for helping out here claire, have been on john for over 14 years now, and still end up in same place |

You could try the easy route first. There are several people on here with Matilda McCabe in their tree. Try contacting them to see if they know if she married. Did she have children, a John who doesn't fit in with her marriage dates would be GOOD! |

My two cents -- given that the names are fairly uncommon (Belton and McCabe), and the father's name matches, and you have a situation with a widowed householder and a young woman domestic servant, I think you have all the ingredients of a classic case. |
