What was his father's name? (I'm assuming you have his marriage cert ...)

Susan

Susan Report 14 Dec 2008 00:46

The only information i have is his name William and he was born in Denton in 1831.

Jill 2011 (aka Warrior Princess of Cilla!) Report 14 Dec 2008 00:47

There are at least 3 possibilities for him on the 1851 (none say Denton) but without his father's name would be difficult to know which one he might be.

Pure speculation based on birth of first child and location of family in 1861 - this could be totally wrong:

His son's birth reg: (the number will need checking)

Births Dec 1860 (>99%)

HULL John James Wigan 8c __ Scan available - click to view

This will give you mum's maiden name - so you can find the marriage cert - so you can track down his father's name. It all seems a bit conjectural otherwise and you could so easily go off down the wrong tree.

for reference purposes

is this the 1881 Census???

Name: William Hull
Age: 50
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1831

Spouse's Name: Margaret
Gender: Male
Where born: Denton, Lancashire, England

Civil Parish: Hindley
County/Island: Lancashire

William Hull 50
Margaret Hull 53 b.ca 1828, Chorley, Lancashire
John James Hull 20 b.ca 1861, Hindley, Lancashire, Coal Miners Drawer
Henry Hull 18 b.ca 1863, Hindley, Coal Miners Drawer
William Hull 12
Teresa Hull 15
Catherine Henrys 60 Boarder

If so ...... he is on the 1861 Census with Margaret, John J age 6 months and Alice age 6

I have not yet tried to find him on the 1871 ... where there must be a mis-translation.

Have you looked on at the International Genealogical Index on www.familysearch.org, the Mormon site? There are two William Hulls baptized at the Cathedral in Manchester, one in 1831 and one in 1832. Both are extracted recortds ........ as you probably know, we have to be very wary of SUBMITTED records.

The eldest child, Alice, was born in ca 1855 .... so it may be possible to find a marriage for William and Margaret on either the IGI or on www.freebmd.org.uk

Otherwise, you will have to buy the birth certificate for one of the children to find Margaret's maiden name. Unfortunately John James does not have the page # showing on freebmd

Births Dec 1860 (>99%)

HULL John James Wigan 8c __

You can get another version of the birth registraiton by going to www.lancashirebmd.org.uk

Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1860

HULL John James Hindley Wigan & Leigh HNDL/23/296

Hope that gives you some ideas

As per your thread on TTF, you need to order a child's birth cert followed by a copy of William's marriage cert. I'm convinced he didn't marry until 1860

Thanks Jill, yes he is a direct ancestor william would be my dads great grandad, i think we have established that John was his father and Mother was Harriett, i suppose its back to the drawing board now to find their ancestry, any ideas on that... sorry

Jill 2011 (aka Warrior Princess of Cilla!) Report 14 Dec 2008 01:09

I personally would make sure I had all the certs necessary to prove that line before I went looking for his parents.

The 1831 baptism in Manchester Cathedral may not be him - but if you can check his father's name and occupation you might then be able to find him on the 1841 and 1851 censuses which would help - plus give a clue to where his parents came from and their ages.

You could be wasting your time otherwise.
