hello elizabeth
i have been unable to find alice and maud coming into GB prior to 1885 but i dont have worldwide subs to ancestry so it may be worth a try to ask for a passenger look up for
alice biggins/davies/davis going out to america and returning with maud
then maybe you could find william with her
but of course there is always the poss that they weren,t legally married and she came home saying they were married
ethel and or herberts birth certs may well be worth getting.
good luck and id love to know if you find him
vivienne

edit
i can not see alice on 1881 cesus but she was in england in 1871 per the census so the time frame your looking for passengers back and forth is
1871 to 1884/5 ish

Hello Vivienne

I have looked at the Ellis Island web site to see if I can find William and Alice entering the USA around 1882 but they only have records AFTER 1892. So that is no good. I think I will try to get Ethel's birth certificate though as you suggest. I have found Alice on the 1871 census as you did and as I told you, I have a copy of her birth certificate. I will see if I can get a copy of her marriage certificate (with William) but I have never yet applied for birth and marriage certificates so must see if I can do that now on the internet.
Thank you for all your help. I will let you know if I make progress with William Davies.

Best wishes
Elizabeth. (I live in Switzerland but my family live in Cheltenham and I was born in Essex).
