Elizabeth Report 7 Dec 2008 18:00

Hello Vivienne

I have looked at the Ellis Island web site to see if I can find William and Alice entering the USA around 1882 but they only have records AFTER 1892. So that is no good. I think I will try to get Ethel's birth certificate though as you suggest. I have found Alice on the 1871 census as you did and as I told you, I have a copy of her birth certificate. I will see if I can get a copy of her marriage certificate (with William) but I have never yet applied for birth and marriage certificates so must see if I can do that now on the internet.
Thank you for all your help. I will let you know if I make progress with William Davies.

Best wishes
Elizabeth. (I live in Switzerland but my family live in Cheltenham and I was born in Essex).

hello elizabeth
i have been unable to find alice and maud coming into GB prior to 1885 but i dont have worldwide subs to ancestry so it may be worth a try to ask for a passenger look up for
alice biggins/davies/davis going out to america and returning with maud
then maybe you could find william with her
but of course there is always the poss that they weren,t legally married and she came home saying they were married
ethel and or herberts birth certs may well be worth getting.
good luck and id love to know if you find him
vivienne

edit
i can not see alice on 1881 cesus but she was in england in 1871 per the census so the time frame your looking for passengers back and forth is
1871 to 1884/5 ish

so therefore the 1901 census above is incorrect on both counts BUT the 1891 is correct for alice ,maud ,ethel and, herbert
the question marrks against nottingham are there because above it on the original image which has crossings out there are words that say
in the united states of america, this is written against alice and obviousley the census taker was having a bad day
ethel was born in nottinghamshire going on the following from 1901which is very clear on the original

P.S. I only know about the possibility of William Henry Davies being born in Llanfaelog from my cousin. He certainly did have Welsh connections so this could be right. The same applies to his estimated birth day which my cousin gave me on the tree she had done.

Dear Vivienne

Many thanks for the info. My grandmother was actually born in New York in 1883, her parents having gone over to the USA as her father was involved in doing the insurance for Brooklyn Bridge. She was not therefore born in Nottingham. Alice Biggins married 3 times, her first husband was William Davies, her second was Arthur Herbert Sycamore whom I think (information given to me by my cousin) she married on 9.10.1893, and her 3rd husband was Albert Ambrose. I am really concerned with her first husband William Davies who was my great-grandfather. My cousin thinks he was born in Llanfaelog, Anglesey but I am not 100% sure if that is correct.

Thank you.

Are you sure William was born in Llanfaelog?

Elizabeth

Elizabeth Report 5 Dec 2008 20:23

Dear Vivienne in Wales

Brilliant what you have sent me !! Yes, this is my grandmother, Maud Lillian Davies. She was born on June 21 , 1883 and I know she had a sister called Ethel Davies. I did not know of a brother called Herbert Davies. I had no idea where her mother Alice Biggins was born but I see " Nottingham" is with a ??. Did you get this info from a census ? I still would like to find out more about Alice's husband, William Henry Davies who must have died relatively young because Alice married 3 times in all.

Any more help. ?? Thank you so much.

Elizabeth Report 5 Dec 2008 17:28

Many thanks for all the messages !! In answer to
Vivienne in Wales, I have a copy of my grandparents's marriage certificate which has William Henry Davies (commercial traveller) as her father. I also have a family tree from my cousin who has down Alice Sarah Biggins born 8.11.1856 in Holborn as my grandmother (Maud Lilian Davies)'s mother. I know this is the case. So William Henry Davies and Alice Biggins were married but like you I cannot find any birth certificate for W. Davies. I have a copy of Alice Biggins's birth certificate registered in Holborn. Can anyone find out any more about this William Henry Davies please ? I shall be very grateful for any info.

No, I don't have the census for him . I know he married Alice Sarah Biggins but I don't know just when, probably in the 1870's or early 1880's. Any help would be much appreciated.
