Find Ancestors

Thanks Janice. I don't seem to be very good at finding my way round these directories, but I'll certainly give it a go.

I was up till nearly 2 this morning looking at The Era, a sort of trade publication for the music halls, and found a few references to Leo, and loads to Antonia and George.

Glitterbaby, that is certainly the Powers as I found them in the 1881, Artil is Arthur L. Hughes. In the 1891 they are all in theatrical lodgings in Bradford.

I do have a copy of the Power/Pilarski marriage, she shows herself as single.

I've also found them in the 1891, but its no help in finding Arthur Leopold's father, unfortunately. He is the one that is my brick wall, I've found out Antonia's family, and am not too interested in George Power's family as he's only the step-father.

what is the son(1873) name?

Just to reiterate, I did find an Alfred Arthur Hughes photographer in the 1871 and 1881, in the 1891 and 1901 he was listed as carpenter (which had been his father's occupation in the earlier census returns), so perhaps he's the right one rather than the one I've found in the Gazette.

Its so frustrating.

Janice, unfortunately I don't. The only reference I have to him is on his son's birth certificate, 1873, mother Antonia Hughes, formerly Pilarski. But in 1880 she married George Power, and in the 1881 the son was living with her and George. I can't find a record of a Hughes/Pilarski marriage, so assume they didn't bother.

She was a dressmaker, then actress/dancer, need I say more.

Therefore all I know about Arthur Alfred Hughes is that, in 1873, he was a photographer, living at 17 Foley Street, Marylebone, which I've since discovered was a lodging house.

I've tried looking in Kellys, to no avail.

Going to have a cup of tea now, back in a little while.

I've just found a notice in the London Gazette which says he died on 24th day of September 1886 at 46 Pelham-street, South Kensington, in the county of Middlesex. Can't find him on BMD either. Odd.

try just putting Pelham without street. Ancestry will only look for what you put in and it may be" st"
There is a Pelham Mews Kensington

theres one in Whitechapel but no number 46

Can find one in Spitalfields but no photographer listed


Pelham Mews is in Kensington

The only Pelham Street I can find is in Nottingham - HELP!!!
