Hi Christine,
I got the information on Gorbert from a GR hotmatches email (Anne Parker). She just said she thought Georges grandfather could be Gorbert Huzzard b1801 in Hull, living in Huzzards Yard. He had a livery stable. Also, she said he could be the son of ann Uzard (huzzard) b1775 in Flamborough. She just asked me to look at the censuses and see what I thought... leap of faith really. Just gathering all possibilities to see if we can get further back than George...
I was thinking that I will send for George's birth and marriage certificate to get verification for William (addresses etc.). Then send off for William's birth certificate... probably the only way I will find out for sure if I am on the right track with Gorbert and/or Ann! What would you do?
Think I will contact Anne Parker again, ask her where she found her info. She also told me (ages ago) that she had a newspaper article regarding one of the Huzzards (think it was a tram accident?) and that she would send me it.. will remind her! Wonder if it was George? and that is why he died so young? Will get on it right away.
Regards,
Carole

Where did you get the info from which takes you back to Gorbert?

Hi Christine,
Did I tell you that I found George Huzzard's death entry on Tees Valley Indexes?!! He died in 1904 (May/June quarter Middlesbrough). So, Benjamin was only 1 year old... and George W was only 5ish.. they were the only Huzzard children, then the Mennell children after that. I also found Eliza's second marriage to Henry Mennell, 1907, Middlesbrough.
I don't know if it was a good thing or not you giving me that Gale Newstrial website Christine!!!.... I am having a hard time getting away from it! I found the WW1 Documentation for George W - many thanks. It's a shame that so much of the paperwork was totally illegible though.. especially the health/medical form which would have given me a description of him physically... oh well, at least I have documentation of his medals, where he was stationed, etc. Lovely that this was FREE for the trial period... have been looking at old newspaper obituaries, etc. too. Could not find a newspaper for the Middlesbrough area, but found a Hull one!! A lot of the Huzzard mentions relate to the Harold W. Huzzard's (from the WW1 Records) next of kin, George Huzzard who lived at Wilsic Hall, Doncaster. Enjoyed looking though..
Oh, one piece of info I found out on that site, under Death Obituaries from the Hull Packet & EastRiding Times, was a death on August 3rd, 1846, John Huzzard, age 77, Livery Stable Keeper, Salthouse-Lane. Wondering if this was Gorbert's father??? Gorbert was born in 1801 and had a Livery Stable (1851 Census, Kingston Upon Hill). Any chance of a lookup or two for John Huzzard, b. 1769?? PLEASE AND THANK YOU!
That's all for now... early bedtime as I have an early shift at work (first day back after 4 days off sick...)...
Regards,
Carole

Morning Christine!
Yes, I spent quite a long time last night trying to find George's death too on Freebmd. I am going to have a look at Tees Valley Indexes now. So Benjamin (grandad) was only 4 years old when his mom married again. He probably didn't remember his father at all. I have been in contact with Andrew Huzzard (my dad's cousin Colin's son) and Colin told Andrew that (Colin's) grandfather had died when (Colin's) father was very young and he didn't remember him. Fits.
Many thanks.
Bye for now,
Carole

I'm with you now, you mean he gave Eliza Mennell as next of kin on army service records.
I've just had a look at them.
Here's the marriage

I don't see a death on Free BMD for his father George though.

sorry... I meant that Eliza (Smith) married George Huzzard, then, perhaps married a Mennell (hence George William Huzzard, b 1899 (who was Benjamins brother and Georges son..) gave Eliza MENNELL as his next of kin (his mom who had married again...) - make sense?? I have been very sick over the past 3 days with a stinking cold, throat infection and ear infection and still getting over it - thick head to say the least - on antibiotics, that's my excuse for any stupid statements, haha.
Night-night.

Hi Carole,
I don't know what you mean about Eliza must have married again (Mennell)
Margaret gave you full details from the BVRI discs, I gave you the entry from Free BMD, which was the Jun qtr. Middlesbro.
It's much easier to look for the marriage under the least common surname, then when you find a likely one click on the vol number and it brings up the other people listed on the same page.
As you now have their father's details maybe you don't need the cert.
Have to sign off now, it's getting late.

Hi Christine,
This marriage entry set me off looking for George's marriage to Eliza Smith on FreeBMD... found Eliza Smith in Burnley, and a few Elizabeth Smiths in Whitby and York... I tried typing in the vol and no. info from Eliza's/Elizabeth's entry, but could not find George - thinking that they weren't married... but then found a message received from Margaret Manson on the Huzzard thread:
Huzzard, George, Age 22 Wife: Eliza Smith, Age 23 Marriage Date: 11 Apr 1898 Recorded in: Linthorpe (that is in Middlesbrough!), Yorkshire, England Husband's father: William Huzzad Wife's father: George Samuel Smith Source: FHL Film 1546299 Dates 1897 - 1901
So I guess they were married. Eliza MUST have married again (Mennell)? Margaret found the entry on "BVRI" - I googled BVRI, found a site, but couldn't do a search (think I had to pay something like 90 pounds for a membership? Have you heard of this site?

Carole

Hi Christine in Portugal,
One more page to print off, thank you. I think that Hull area is FULL of our Huzzards - I remember when I first started my research there was a Huzzard descendent on my hot matches list who said we were all descendent from Cesar (sp) Huzzard in Hull??!!!
How long have you lived in Portugal?? I hear it's wonderful... I would love to be in a warmer climate right now, although our October/November so far have been way warmer than usual. Ilive in Campbell River, on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada - we emigrated to Canada (N. Alberta first - the tarsands company in Fort McMurray for 12 years - brrr the winters were soooo cold), then moved here in 1990. Still miss my family... try to get back to England to see my mum and sisters/brother and all when I can - was back in May of this year for a big reunion of my mum's family, the Laings. I found mam's longlost cousin in America (long story.. mam's grandfather flew the coop in 1909 with his "wife" and had another family there!). It was sooo much work putting together the family research book I presented mam with for her 75th birthday, and surprised her with the reunion party, and the American cousin came for a week (mam had no idea... it was amazing!). We still keep in touch and the cousin wants me to go and visit her in North Carolina. It was strange the way she was just "family" right away, we all loved her. It felt wonderful to finally give mam the answer to all her questions of what happened to her grandfather.
Anyway, after all that research, had 6 months off - now am back with the Huzzards!! Hope it doesn't take over my life like last time - I burned the early-hour oil a lot!!! Nothing much got done around the house hahaha.. it cost me a FORTUNE to do it too, with memberships, credits, etc.. so thought I would try and cut down this time around.. thanks to you and a couple more I can do that! x
Bye for now,
Carole

Hi Christine,
Once again, I am so indebted to you - I completely forgot about the Free BMD and will check out the Family Search Church Records too. Feeling like I am totally getting somewhere now, thanks to you. Will now send off for some certificates now that I have references. I sent off for Benjamins birth certificate and marriage certificate through Tees Valley Indexes, will have a look to see if they go back as far as I need!
Take care,
Carole

I have found them for you but BMD's 1837-1920 can be found on this site.

Some earlier details can also be found here from parish registers.

Both these sites are free to use.

If the 1861 census I found is your William Huzzard born 1856, his father was William born c1833. So I think his parents are this family. Cerificates would prove this though.

You are going to have to get some certificates as I don't think this family go back to Gobert.
This marriage cert will give you William's fathers name.
