PaulaW, I am wondering about John Day aged 22. I have been led to believe that Ellen Bateley was John Day's (head of household) house keeper. Maybe John was married before and had a son John Day. The age between these children might suggest this. Is there any way to trace this?

On the 61 census, John is unmarried, age 27 with housekeeper Ellen Blakley, 20 and son John Samuel, 2. Sure looks like John Samuel is son of John and his housekeeper.

On the 71 census John & Ellen are married with sons John Samuel, 12 and Henry, 2.

The only way to know who John Samuel's mother was is to buy his birth certificate.

Ellen could have been his fathers 2nd wife.
