Would it have been possible that they registered his birth as George Griffiths and that he later found out that he was illegitamate and that his mother's name was Bayliss?

Hi Julia

It was quite common for children of either a previous marriage or illegitimate to take the name of their step father for the census. It may be they were know by the step fathers name or just used it to legitimise them for officialdom. They usually used their birth name when they later married etc.

Definately right, he was brought up by this Joseph Griffiths. Why they're calling him Griffiths, I don't know he was definately Bayliss.

Thank you for ruling out the west bromwich one for me, I was going to order that birth certificate, won't now though.

Don't suppose I'll ever make any headway with this, methinks they covered up the scandal too well! I have his confirmation card which states his name as George Bayliss don't understand why he appears as Griffiths in the 1901 census.

His father is the one born in 1827.

Thank you so much, he had a different surname to his father, yes. There was some scandal attached to his birth. In the 1901 census he appears as George Griffiths, born west bromwich, 1890, living with his father, Joseph Griffiths in Burghill, Herefordshire. Supposedly he was illegitemate, so I don't suppose this was him. Thank you so much for looking.
