thanks for that on the info you sent me he is married to fanny and a frances? would that be the same person of 2 different people?
there is the spelling of dewit is this correct?

is there anyway of getting williams mothers maiden name

Frances/Fanny could be the same lady, her age and place of birth is the same I believe.

As for spelling, since most folk couldn't write then the forms were filled in by others who wrote how it was said. And also some of the census are handwritten spiders scrawl and very difficult to transcribe.

I have a family branch whose name changed from Eskdale to Estall/Estill due to a North Yorkshire accent.

You could send for Williams birth certificate mentioned above, with a search proviso that you are looking for parents James and Martha (I think).
