If you go to

www.gro.gov.uk

you can order the certificate online.

You have to register with the site (for security reasons).

When you get to the screen where it asks if the GRO ref is known click the "yes" option then enter the details Andrew posted.

You need to enter them exactly as Andrew has posted them in the apprpriate boxes;

If you try to order the certificate without the number it would cost more as the GRO staff would have to search for the certificate.

On the 1891 census it shows that Susan was born in Shropshire. I will look at this though just incase.

How would I get a birth certificate for Frederick?

"I have come to a fullstop as I have been unable to go back any further as I am not sure what Janie's surname was at the time of Fredericks birth, and if she was married at the time."


The info re her surname and marital status will be on Fredericks birth cert (both surnames should be the same, child is registered under the surname of the mother at time of birth).

Again you will only know if you order the certificate.


Andy posted the likely birth ref earlier in the thread, without the details from the birth certificate it is going to be difficult to trace the family correctly,

Seeing as it is a direct line member of the family then the certificate is even more important, without it anything else predating Frederick is largely guesswork.

I was told that Janie changed Frederick's surname to Hoskin, as he was brought up in her sister Mary Hoskin's home who was a widow, so I assumed Hoskin was her married surname. When Frederick later married he gave his children the surname Vincent Hoskin, which was later changed by deed poll to just Hoskin.

I know that Susan was born in Shropshire, but have no record in any census of them.

Do you know if Mary married?if she did be worth getting her marriage cert.

Yes I have the information from the 1891 census. My late father in law used to talk about having cousins named Wasley, so I am sure this information is correct.

I know that a lot of people in Cornwall emigrated to mining areas in the mid to late 1800's, as you can see Janie's sister was born in Brazil. the daughter of a miner, but I have no information to go on as to his name.

Yes that is the information I found. Mary was actually a HOSKIN not Hockin as is suggested on the entry.

I am assuming that no father was named on Frederick's birth certificate. I still am unable to find out what Janies parents were called.
