The 1891 Census shows an Arthur Gabriel living in Hackney showing as the son of a Charles Gabriel born in London in c 1847 and his Wife Emily born in Hoxton London in c 1856.RG12/202/115/5.

yes my grandfather,s full name was arthur william sinclair my mother was agnes ada sinclair, now there should not be a problem for me in trying to go back and trace this side of the family, on my mums marriage and birth certificate states that her father was arthur william sinclair again no problems, now the mystery starts when my grandfather died we recieved his death certificate stating when and were died age and his name only he was arthur william gabriel. Can you see the problem i am up against have you any suggestions kind regards chris

Do you have your Grandparents marriage certificate??? If not I would take a gamble and see if this is the correct marriage cert, hopefully it will confirm his fathers name and occupation, the witnesses maybe of help too.

Thanks again for all your info i have just sent you a msg sorry i forgot about this reply, i am following up this info i am not still sure about arthur william sinclair, my mother always claimed he was a deserter from the 1st ww however i am trying to get info also about this ie his army records i hope this will comfirm my thoughs did he get leave when his wife died that would of been my mums mum ada sarah i will let you know i am wondering if this is when he changed his name according to my mum he went under about 3 different sir names could gabriel been 1 of them i realy dont know at this moment in time? again Kind Regards Chriss

Just letting you know the marriage certificate of my grandfather and his 2wife as arrived, arthur w Gabriel 34yrs widower edith hampton 38yrs widow residence at the time of marriage 34 Arkley Road walthamstow Arthur fathers name Frederick charles gabriel, ediths father Arthur Pitcher both deceased that was back in 1918.

On my mothers marriage certificate it has the same address she was married in june 1944 i cant help but wonder?

I am still waiting for the other certificates 2 arrive god know what awaites me of 4 a drink of tea now speak soon and kind regards Chris

Well we know that Frederick Charles Gabriel was his brother, could it also have been his fathers name too??

We'll wait and see what other info is on the other certs........... hopefully they will be alittle more revealing.

I still can't see Arthur or Sidney, however they were still young enough to be "taken in" and stated as the carers children.


Sidney Victoria Gabriel marries in 1915, Poplar. I can't see him on the 1911 census either.

The more I think about it the more I think they were taken in, maybe by the Sinclair family????

just letting you know i have finally got the wedding certificate for william sinclair and ada wilson married in 1910 at whitechael his father was charles sinclair and her father was thomas wilson both deceased.
wittnest by mary helen sorry cat make last name out and william james fitmas,
i also recieved my grandmothers death certificate september1917 and it reads the wife of william sinclair. A Private R F not sure what that means, i wonder if this is when he changed his name to gabriel???.
i also recieved the 2nd marriage certificate for arthur william gabriel and edith hampton they were widows his father was frederich charles gabriel and her father was arthur pitcher both deceased , i realy am confussed by this i dont think this the same man,
