maybe too much research though i beleive a lot of Shearer came from Orknay Islands but i have not resources to follow that through

my father worked as a Carter and his father and his Grand father i see connections to marriages from Female side ie there fathers worked as Saddlers or Carters etc my father worked in Aberdeen for a Company Called Wordies for Railroad up until 1942 but lived in Glasgow , Births of his Sibblings around Govan and St Rollex which built Trains they employed Carters etc he kept that a secret lol got that imfo from Mother whos in her late 80s also on his death certificate and Army Records for both him and his Dad and his Brother Ralph wwwI in Vetanery corp & wwwII Records for my dad imform me they where Carters by Trade or Engine Keepers ,Journymen , Gas fitters / Bell Hangers

David...Do you know if there was any connection at all with the Highlands and Islands...? Have had a quick scan on the 1881 Census and the Shearer name is prolific up in Perth/Argyle and Mora.....

Wasnt George T. S. born 1888 the son of "George Shearer" and Mary Patterson...? Thats how I read it...

The George Shearer son of Annie Shearer at 235 Gt.West Road was not born 1881 that was the Census..!!...He was 18yrs at the time ....fits with the date of birth you have for him....

Oh i see where you are going with George Shearer 1881 this is not related with my family tree

my grand parent was called George Thomson Shearer born on a leap year 29 02 1888

Mary Paterson was my Great Grandmother married to one of Grandfathers whos name was George Shearer after her death he remarried a Janet Carrick my next Great grand mother he then died a year after ;(

Denise i cant seem to find who John McLachlan 1851 Scotland Census was i am lost here as Janet Carricks Mothers Maiden name was Ann Barlow 1839 - 1902 as far as i have found out can you look up again please cross refrence you made with 1871 Scottish Census maybe he was a good friend or long time lodger

Looking at this in last 5 mins i noticed my Great Grandad had a son too Janet Carrick , Joseph C Shearer aged 2 my GGrandad he passed away before his Son was Born aged 36.
