Would some kind person(s), with plenty of experience, advise me as to where I am going wrong with my search for information on the last relative to be hatched, matched and despatched in my tree. Although I have had good people on here look for her, though unsuccessfully, I wonder where else I could look myself. I have used every permutation of her unusual name when looking on Ancestry and Family Search, and although her birth is recorded on Ancestry, and on the 1871 and 1881 census, and the rest of her siblings and parents, the trail goes dead at this point.
I recently had contact with the husband of a distant relative, who had done the family tree some years ago by paper trail rather than computer. In his notes, he had that she had never married, as told by the 'aunts'. Where have we heard that one before. However, that being true, why can't I find her on subsequent census or a death. If she did marry why can't I find a marriage, and a death.
Any helpful suggestions would be really appreciated, before total apathy sets in.

Who are we looking for??

Julia

Julia Report 4 Aug 2008 16:46

Linda - thanks for you prompt reply, but as I said above, people on here have tried to find her before for me with no luck. I don't want to put anyone to any trouble, that is why I asked where I was going wrong, and could someone point me in the right direction to look for myself. I know alot of people have access to sites that I do not, and know how to get the best from them. I hope I do not sound as if I am whinging.
If you are prepared to have a go at it for me, then thank you very much

Have you tried just putting in her Christian name, date of birth +/- 1yr., place of birth and sees what comes up.
I've done that many times and had some really good results.
If you give me her name etc. I'd give it a try for you You never know either Linda or I may just be lucky.

Thanks Marlene B -
Margaret Eliza Wells Webster Turner b 1864, Gt. Gidding, Hunts.
In 1871 census she is Margaret, but in !881, she is Eliza. She is the daughter of William Turner b 1840, Whittlesey, Cambs. By the 1881, the mother of the family had just died, and some children are with their father, and some next door with their aunt Anna Marie Turner, in Gracious St. Whittlesey. I have worked off this information found in the 1881, and found all the other siblings, hatched, matched and despatched.
By the way, that is her full name, as I have a copy of her birth certificate.

No Julie, I am not saying that, or even suggesting that. What I am saying is that many people have access to sites that others do not. I have always been extremely grateful, and expressed that thanks, when others have tried to look for anything for me, and always will be.

In which month of 1864 was she born?

Julia

Many thanks Catherine for you suggestion. Must admit I have not tried that, because I didn't know it would work. Will have a try.

Can I just ask, when using FreeBMD, how do you search double-barrelled surnames? I've never had much success with this. Can someone please give me an example as I think I might be also going wrong somewhere.

Am I right in thinking that Wells Webster are middle names and Turner is the surname?

Selena,

I would read that to be as you see it. Looks like the family were keen to add in female maiden names.... usually you'll find the next to last surname sounding name is the mothers maiden name.

...and i might add i remember the search for this lady....

I did wonder with so many names, did she elect to use one not her given name? Unfortunately for us, she has a large array of choices...

Julia,

have you looked for her in any of the choice options....Margaret Wells, Eliza Turner etc etc

Very slim possibility, age is slightly out and no sign of middle names.

Tracy - only just seen this. Yes Wells Webster, are Christian names, and Turner, the Surname. Other children in the family had the same two Christian names. I do not know where the Wells bit came from, but Webster was the maiden name of the grandmother of this family. They are my direct line, a brother of the family being my gt, grandfather, who I only just missed, he dying just before I was born.
Heidi, thank you, but I already have this information, but thank you again.

Hello Selina
I have just looked at this death, and it would seem a good possibility. If I send for the death certificate, what other information will it contain. I have not sent for a death certificate before.
Many thanks
