Hi every one, thanks Elouise for the census forms, did anyone notice on the census for Thomas Pitthouse in 1851 and Elizabeth was a 24 yr old maid, that S ,Thomas Pitthouse wife, came fron Bungay Suffolk, so Elizabeth on the 1861 census most likely is his niece .Mrs Pitthouse could have been Susan Reads sister get stranger and stranger

Battenburg Report 3 Jul 2008 22:04

Perhaps not.
1851 census.
Susan Read 1803 Bungay Suffolk.occ washerwoman
Susanna dau 1832 Yarmouth occ dressmaker
Mary Wells married sister 1811 Yarmouth occ silk weaver

Battenburg

Battenburg Report 3 Jul 2008 21:58

The Ancestry transcription
Susan Redd 1803 Bungay occ laundress
Susan 1834 as daughter
James as grandson

Im wondering if Susan could be James mother since on the 1851 census when Elizabeth is living with Thomas Pithouse James is nephew. I know its usually in relationship to the head but perhaps in this case it was Elizabeths nephew

That is the one, she was 24 and it seems her name was spelt wrong, I think the one with Thomas Pitthouse is the same Elizabeth and James is the same James, my gt, grandfather, I would like to track his family, I know all about the Robinsons going way back, but stuck on the Reads

Hi Elouise, seems like we are crossing over somehow, but that Elizabeth could be the right one, my grandfather did have a brother Edward, which James could have named after a uncle, seems funny if it was the right Elizabeth , since James married a Susannah, and had a sister Susannah too, wonder if Robert was the father or the grandfather, I know this Elizabeth doesnt show up on Genes, does it give a house address.

A Elizabeth Read(Reed) turns up on the 1851 census for a Thomas Pithouse, in London, she is listed as a maid, at that time S. Pithouse is listed as his wife, but Thomas and Elizabeth turn up on the 1861 census for Hampshire, he as the inn keeper, and she as his housekeeper, and also listed as his niece, James is listed too, as his nephew, aged 4, dont have copies of the census forms though, but this time no wife is listed

Hi every one, thanks all again, I did find out on one census that Thomas Pithouse, lived in London, and on that census an Elizabeth Read shows up as maid in his household, but I forgot which census, and it does show her as coming from Yarmouth, I,ve often wondered how a young girl got from Yarmouth to be a serving maid in London, and on that census nothing is said as she being Thomas,s niece, I have tried to find a Elizabeth Read born 1827 in Yarmouth, but every lead I have had is always the wrong Elizabeth, or the wrong family, she is a mystery, as is where they disapeared to after Hampshire

It's possible that if his parents died while he was very young he may not have known their names - that may explain the absence of a father's name on the marriage cert ...

A bit surprised that no one has found him in 1881.

1891 and 1901 both give the same occupation

Thanks every one again, I,m in the U.S and cant get to the files you are getting into, My gt. grandfather was always known as James, my grandfather his youngest son was William, His oldest son was always known as Jimmy, it seems he never did tell anyone his back ground, that is why nobody knows anything, It seems the info on Hampshire maybe right, but after that, nothing, no info at all on his mother or him untill getting married in Yarmouth, and it seems Elouise is the closest, and I think maybe Pithouse is the father, but everything from Hampshire on, and his birth are shrouded in mystery

Thanks every one, James W Read married to Susannah Robinson is the right person, It was on his marriage cert. that gave the place born as Hoxton London, and that is all we have ever been able to find out about him, fathers name on it was a blank line, I would like to know more about the one born in the workhouse by Elouise,
James and Susannahs, children were James, Edward, William and Lucy
