Carol Vivienne Report 28 Jun 2008 14:06

Hello My Name is Carol Smallman, I have 2 ancestors with the surname of LEE, no relation, but on my father's side was William Lee, he left Stockport and came to Australia.

The other one was Thomas Lee, who was a convict and transported to Australia.
His trial was at the Hertford Assizes.

Does anyone know how I can find the parents of these 2 ancestors.

Thanks, Carol

Jane's father Sam is a moulder here:
1891 census
2 Osborne St., Heap, Heywood, Lancashire
Sam Tolley, head, 54, iron moulder, born Worcester, Ribbenhall
Martha, wife, 57
*Jane, dau, 16, cotton weaver
Annie M., dau, 13, cotton weaver
Ernest, son, 10, roller lifter (half time)
Wife & children born Heywood.

MargaretM Report 21 Jun 2008 21:41

Yvonne, I wonder if perhaps you mixed up the occupations of the fathers? It seems that Samuel's father Robert Lee was the moulder and it looks like Jane's stepfather was a grocer.
1901 census
36 High St., Heywood, Lancashire
John E. Ashworth, head, widower, 54, assistant grocer
Walter, son, 24, cotton (something?) packer
Sarah A., dau, 22, dressmaker
Leonard C., son, 18, apprentice joiner
Annie L., dau, 17, dressmaker
Ernest Tolley, son, 20, dress improver?
*Jane Tolley, 26, cotton twister
All born Heywood.

I'm not sure if the Tolleys belong with this family, there's a double // between them and the Ashworths but they are listed as son and daughter.
I'm going back to 1891 to check.

152 Heap Ferry/Terry? (Top of Heap), Heywood, Lancashire
Robert Lee, head, 44, moulders labourer, born Bury
Mary Eliz., wife, 43, cotton waever, born Manchester
*Samuel, son, 19, civil service temporary postman, born Heywood
Clara, dau, 17, cotton weaver, born Heywood
Nathan, son, 14, civil service telegraph messenger, born Heywood

You don't need the exact date, Yvonne, just the volume and page numbers. (Hope you're using GRO and not paying more than 7 pounds.)
p.s. You meant Samuel Lee, didn't you? Not Samuel Thompson.

Yvonne Report 15 Jun 2008 12:38

MANY THANKS FOR YOUR HELP, IT IS MUCH APPRECIATED, I HAVE JUST TRIED TO PURCHASE THE MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE ON LINE BUT AM UNABLE TO, DUE TO THE FACT I DO NOT HAVE AN EXACT DATE OF MARRIAGE, FOR JANE TOLLEY AND SAMUEL THOMPSON. SO I SEEM TO HAVE DRAWN A BLANK THERE.

That looks the right record Margaret.

It was Samuel Tudor who died in 1944 - son of Samuel Lee and Jane Tolley.
