I have found the person I am looking for, but I cannot read the fathers occupation...can anybody have a look for me and perhaps give me a clue please?

Its in the 1901 census and the name is Mary May Hopkins.

(It looks like farmer but also sub-something. I cant read what is in the brackets either! Also, in the next collumn, "own?????")

Fathers name?

MargaretM Report 3 Jun 2008 23:41

It's farmer (mixed? work) & sub postmaster. (you'll notice his address is post office)
Next column is own account meaning he doesn't work for anyone else.

I'm so sorry...

Fathers name was Richard Hopkins and mothers name was Hannah Hopkins.

Tracey

Tracey Report 3 Jun 2008 23:48

Oh duh! I'm blind as well as thick. I never checked the address.

Thanks everso for that...I am going up in the world...all of my ancestors (so far) have just been farm workers!

I'm sorry...I have another one here that I cannot read.

This time it's in the 1871 census with the same family.

Fathers name is Richard Hopkins, wife Hannah.

Something? Farm? Foreman?

Road?

JenW

JenW Report 4 Jun 2008 00:32

i dont know if you've noticed but on the 1901 census, they are living in the same road (or area depending on how far apart farms, post office, etc were) as what appears to be richard's brother, william?

Tracey

Tracey Report 4 Jun 2008 00:36

?????????

JenW

JenW Report 4 Jun 2008 00:36

looking at the age, maybe not brother. but must be some relation

JenW

JenW Report 4 Jun 2008 00:37

if you go to the 1901 census with richard and hannah on and look at the others on the page, there are more hopkins

Tracey

Tracey Report 4 Jun 2008 00:44

OMG...It's his father!! I have just checked the 1861 census with Richard's name and his parents are William and Mary.

Bless your heart!...I missed that!

Tracey

Tracey Report 4 Jun 2008 00:56

No, it's not his father...wrong years. What do you reckon? He didn't have a son called William, do you think it could be a nephew?

(His father is also called William though with a wife also called Mary)

JenW

JenW Report 4 Jun 2008 00:56

i dont know if it is, i saw that but if you look at the ages, they're younger. did he have a younger brother called william who married a mary?

Tracey

Tracey Report 4 Jun 2008 01:02

I haven't found that part of the family as yet, I am just doing that now....I have just found on the 1861 census that:

Father=William Hopkins
Mother=Mary
Him=Richard
Sister=Fanny
Bro=Charles

JenW

JenW Report 4 Jun 2008 01:14

no it would appear these are the only children they had. i wonder where the other william and mary come into it then.

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 4 Jun 2008 01:15

I think the occupation in 1871 is "turnpike road foreman"

JenW

JenW Report 4 Jun 2008 01:22
