It very probably is him - I have him in 51 , 61 and more likely the 1901
He just cannot seem to be found for the 30 years inbetween
Same as I dont think his father John can be found in the 1871 - John was a preacher and visited Palestine & America so Harold may have been with his father also preaching I guess
Harold's father is/was quite a famous man , he has wrote 2-3 books had a book wrote about him , has a chapel named after him - chapel for the destitute - Ashworth memorial chapel
Hence the frustration of trying to find them

Hi Debbie,

Dont know if this will help but I have a Mary Jane Brearley (b 1844) in my family tree with brother called James. I do not think this is your family but it may help to exclude them for you.

Parents were Abel & Sarah.

There is 1 other Brearley family in Rochdale with James & Mary on 1851 census- parents James & Sarah.
